The movies are sooo bad made infinately worse by the crappy, crappy, acting of the leads. I've confessed it before, I have read the books and found them oddly compelling even as I was ranting about how it didn't make any sense. I'll probably go see the movie or at least watch it when its on TV or something but after reading your review I'll be cringing a little harder than normal.

The Nessie joke was Meyer's bit but I don't recall Bella's dad thinking Jacob was coming on to him. That sounds hilarious.

About the imprinting thing. The idea does have serious creep factors in it but the movies did a far worse job than the books did at making it at least a little easier to stomach.

The key was that the imprinting is supposed to always remain age appropriate. And it is not that they are lusting after toddlers, but that they are devoted to the person forever and are determined to be whoever or whatever that other person needs them to be so if it's a child, then they are just the best bud or friend or protector and aren't supposed to feel any of the icky stuff until it is the right time.

The question was asked if the person being imprinted on has any choice and the answer was basically why wouldn't they love them back if they were so perfect for them?

I had a harder time buying into that idea than the notion that the attachment was only romantic in some nebulous future. There's room for all sorts of messed up stuff in that hazy period between teenager and adult though that I still try not to think about.

Gah! I can't believe I spent this much time talking about it.

I think even people that outright loved the books were put off by the final installment, from what I know. By the time this came out, it was all giggles.

I just keep thinking of the many, many ways Meyer could have done it that wouldn't have had me creeped out. Maybe the books did it better. I won't bother reading, still, but GAH!

"so if it's a child, then they are just the best bud or friend or protector and aren't supposed to feel any of the icky stuff until it is the right time."

I would rather it was put across differently. Like maybe Jacob felt connection and a need to protect her and maybe only Alice knew that it would turn into romance or whatever later. Still icky, but somehow less, if you get me.

I know! I'm just glad this franchise is done for.
