Music Spam! High school flashback edition (a.k.a. random nostalgia brought on by "shuffle" mode)

Aug 20, 2010 23:33

Oh man, high school. Now, I've always listened to a wide variety of music and I never really stop listening to any one genre. But high school? Man, in high school I was going through a serious thing music-wise.

I absolutely hated everything I was hearing on the radio (back when local radio was still your best bet for new music) and I was just discovering the world of MP3s. And by "just discovering" I mean parking in front of the computer while it took HOURS and HOURS to download, like, 3 songs. BACK IN THE DAY. So I went seeking new music to listen to because I couldn't fathom just listening to old stuff over & over until music got good again. And what did I find? Two things, really: underground punk and J-Rock/J-Pop.

The Japanese music was especially a big thing for me because while I'd always been aware that other countries had this sort of music, I didn't really have a lot of experience with it. Thanks to the internet, however, there was a wealth of new material for me to discover and jeez, some of those J-Rockers REALLY knew how to shred a guitar. It effing blew me away and made me rethink my preconceived notions of world music culture. But mostly? Mostly it was GREAT for blasting in the parking lot at school.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share a little bit of my reminiscing for the heck of it. Cut to spare your flists the clog of YouTubery.

Additional insight:
- In case you were curious, several of my hairstyle choices at the time came from these guys
- listening to this stuff I'm now starting to realize that I've forgotten most of the Japanese I'd ever learned.
