I've often said that my friend Bree is my ideal girlfriend because she and I have identical tastes in music, television as well as classic video games. I've never dated anyone that likes the same music or TV as I. Sure, there are common interests...one ex liked Rachael Yamagata, the Gilmore Girls and Super Mario World. One other liked the Beastie Boys (when I liked them), Kids In The Hall and Tetris. Another liked Everclear, Seinfeld and Ninja Gaiden (do those date me or what?) Usually, it's an item here or there, which always made for frustrating moments in the car or at home because there was always a band, a show or a game that they were strongly opposed and that I couldn't talk to about.
There's another bizarre similarity to add to this list...car troubles. Last Friday we'd made plans to hang out this weekend, but she never got in touch. "Just as well" I thought, "I don't have a car. Plus I have two other friends in town who aren't too keen on hanging out."
I received an email from her about an hour ago letting me know why she hadn't called: car trouble. Clearly I can relate. It began with her heater going out on Tuesday, which was the same day that mine went out. Fortunately mine involved wiggling and removing fuses for a cost of zilch. Hers was *much* more expensive. So expensive that I think she got gouged big time.
Later this week, her timing belt and water pump gave out, which is actually what we've determined is going on with my car as well. Another expensive fix, and fortunately it should be about half the price with my car at most. Of course, it means that 120GB Zune I'd been wanting for ages will have to wait awhile. I've told her to bring her car over whenever she needs it looked at, because my dad and neighbor are masters at figuring out what needs to be done.
It's such a weird coincidence that we'd have these same auto problems occur on the same week and in the case of the heater, the same day. For those of you who've seen all of season four of Doctor Who, it reminded me of the Twilight episode, which I watched again today. My car power issue happened just a hair before hers hers two weeks ago, then our heaters gave out on the same day and now her timing belt/water pump gave out the morning mine did. It's like my bad luck rubbed off onto her and she's now transferring it back to me. Perhaps that's the universe's way of telling me to do what it takes to break her of her policy of not dating friends.
