"You find out who your friends are..."

Growing up my whole life with a country-singing, guitar-playing Grandpa born in West Virginia, I grew up with country music in my life. Coincidentally, when my mother got re-married to my stepfather, he too was originally from West Virginia and listened to country. People find it really weird when they find out that I listen too. I mean, like many of us, I went through my "I ONLY LIKE INDIE AND METAL!!!" phase, but the truth behind it all is I've always enjoyed all types of music. Country being one of them.

However, this was most revealed as this last Spring came to a close. I've been on a complete country music kick. It is one of the only types of music that gives me an optimistic outlook on life every time. Not to mention it actually keeps me away from the darker things in life and of my past.

Which brings me to what I really wanted to say. As pointed out by Texas born and Arkansas raised country music star Tracy Lawrence in one of his latest hits: You find out who your friends are.

Excerpt from "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" by Tracy Lawrence
You find out who your friends are
Somebody's gonna drop everything
Run out and crank up their car
Hit the gas, get there fast
Never stop to think "What's in it for me?" or "It's way too far..."
They just show on up with their big old heart
You find out who your friends are

To me, personally, that chorus could not be any truer. I find myself thinking as I try to become a better person that many of the people I hang around do not display that character... that true caring for a person, a friend, a best friend. It's those who have already been there for you or the ones who've actually been in that memorable, funny, yet terrible situation with you.

I believe I've taken my true friends for granted over the years and have distanced myself. It makes me sick to my stomach that I've became more reliable on people who probably... well, just don't give a damn what happens to me, and for that, I'm sorry.

Just don't forget about the ones that matter.
