some people shouldn't use drugs, or religion, and especially not both

This crazy guy murdered his friend under the influence of some sort of hallucinogen back in the 80's. Did it as some sort of Satanic ritual, gouged out the dude's eyes and tried to command him to say "I love thee, Satan" before he died. The incident spawned quite a few movies, books, and songs. Insane stuff.

An MMA fighter on shrooms ripped out his trainer's heart, killing him, because he thought his trainer was possessed by Satan. He also cut off his tongue and a large part of his face.

These are two isolated incidences, and stuff like this doesn't happen very often, so maybe it's wrong to draw conclusions from it, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say these things probably wouldn't have happened without religious archetypes being so prevalent in our society. People intentionally kill people all the time, and people on drugs (including alcohol) are probably involved a good percentage of the time, but if religion wasn't on the minds of those two crazy motherfuckers, those murders probably wouldn't have happened. Don't get me wrong, your mind can run wild with all kinds of crazy ideas while on drugs, especially hallucinogens, but those ideas usually don't cause harm to anyone other than the person having them. Not unless you think someone is possessed by Satan or want to perform a ritualistic sacrifice.

Actually, I take this back. I'm not gonna erase what I wrote, but as I'm typing I'm thinking that good/evil archetypes are basically omnipresent in our society, not just in religion. Even if you don't believe someone is possessed by Satan, you might think they're evil and need to be murdered, if you happen to be insane and/or on drugs. No one I've ever hung out with or ever would hang out with, but obviously there are some people like that. Shit, think about all the crazy murder stories from people in prison.

It's kind of obvious, but it bears repeating that if you have some sort of mental illness, or your head just isn't screwed on completely right normally, don't take drugs. Especially not hallucinogens. But even more socially acceptable drugs like alcohol and caffeine (a hell of a lot of caffeine, it'd most likely have to be) can be a very bad idea. It's natural to desire mind-altering substances, but you have to weigh the potential harm to those around you. Or, if you're a selfish fuck, the potential harm to you once the authorities find out you just killed a guy and gouged out his eyes.

I'm iffy about posting this, but no one reads my blog anyway so whatever.
