Chapter 6

Thermodynamics

-1st law
-energy can be transported or transformed but not destroyed
-2nd law
-every transformation makes the universe more disordered
-entropy measures disorder
-ordered forms are converted to heat
-heat is most random energy
-quantity of energy is constant but not quality

Organisms are open systems

-oragnisms take in organized energy like light or replace is with less ordered energy like heat

-Free energy-the portion of a systems energy that is able to perform work when temp is constant
Spontaneous change
-more energy, less stablem greater work capacity
SPONTANEOUS CHANGE DECREASES FREE ENERGY MAKING IT MORE STABLE
-G=H-TS
T-temp in Kelvin, increased temp,. aplifies entropy
Not all ebergy is free enrgey because entropy must be subtracted from maximum cpacity
