Chances
Chances
Beep Beep Beep~
The alarm went off, and Jessica felt her eyes flutter open. She extended her arm towards the clock, and softly tapped the ‘snooze’ button. It was 7 AM, on a cold Saturday morning. She wondered why it went off, as she didn’t have work today. She guessed that she was too exhausted the night before to flip the switch to the left side. She started to rub the sleet from her eyes and emitted a light yawn.
Jessica turned her head to the right, and grinned at the raven haired girl whose arms were encircled around her petite waist. The girl’s name was Tiffany. She began to reflect on her past with Tiffany, and how things couldn’t be the way they were without the concept of chance. Jessica was never a risk taker, it wasn’t in her. She wouldn’t go out of her comfort zone; she always felt the need to protect herself. Her way of thinking was costly at times, but also saved her as well.

Though for Tiffany, she was willing to take any chance. She remembers many years ago, when she was deciding whether to ask her out or not. She remembers the indecisiveness clouding her mind, the anxiety, and stress. She remembers how much emotionally it took out of her that her grades suffered because of it.
Why was she willing? She was willing because she had been chasing a fantasy in hopes that one day it would become true. A hopeless romantic at heart, and a dreamer, all those terms could describe who Jessica Jung was. She never was any good at communicating with others; her social skills were far from ideal. She would always shy away from eye contact, as she would feel vulnerable and weak. People saw her as ‘eerie’ or ‘weird’ because of the way she acted.
As time went on, she had begun to change. She became more open with others. She laughed more often, talked more often, and showed a side that people never knew existed. Jessica didn’t know when or how she changed, but she accepted it with open arms. However in front of Tiffany, she always reverted to her previous self. It was Tiffany’s effect on her that made her this way, and she despised it so. It was Tiffany’s effect that made her feel so defenseless yet at the same time gave her such bliss, as her heart pounded whenever the latter was near. She knew that she needed to overcome the effect, if she wanted to progress.
Jessica thinks about the day she was going to ask Tiffany out, after weeks of internal conflict. Some people found out what she was going to do, and balked at her. Others who found out said it would be ‘cute’ or ‘adorable’, even going as far as saying ‘the story of the year’. They knew of her feelings, nearly everyone knew. They knew that Jessica was going let down her walls, her barriers, for a single moment, hoping that she would still be alive at the end of the day.
She recalls her friend Taecyeon’s words to her days before.
“Your chances are really slim dude, but it’s up to you if you want to go through with it not”
Jessica didn’t care less if her chances were slim or not. If she was going to get burned badly by Tiffany, then so be it. She would rather be badly burned by the person she cares most about than drowning in a pool of what ifs for eternity. She had come this far, there was no turning back now. Once she saw Tiffany passing by, she approached her. What happened next between the two of them, was simply history.

Jessica’s smile grew wider once she was done reflecting about that day, 5 years ago. She decided that she should whip up some breakfast for both of them. She attempted to remove Tiffany’s arm, but the latter’s grip became tighter.
“Where are you going?” she mumbled drowsily.
“I’m going to make something for breakfast. You just stay in bed.”
“No…stay….”
“Tiffany…..”
“…please”
Jessica sighed in defeat. “Fine, but only for a little longer. I’m hungry you know.” She saw Tiffany’s lips curve into a smile.
“I love you” she said as she snuggled closer.
“I love you too” Jessica responded sweetly.
