On Alcohol and the Irritation of Sobriety

In an effort to save money and get rid of the beer belly that I'm still mostly in denial about, I have greatly reduced the amount of booze I purchase/consume. This has been easier than I thought it would be when I decided to do this, though it's come with one unexpected side effect: some people are simply intolerable to be around when they are drunk and you are not. Old news for some, perhaps, but I'm concerned over the impact this has on what is already not a very active social life.

I have long been an advocate of social drinking, a position I still stand behind. But have you ever really noticed just how insufferable some people are when they are drunk? Witnessing other people yell and scream and engage in general jackassery long after I've cut myself off has given me plenty of time to reflect on just how often I've yelled and screamed and engaged in general jackassery when I've been intoxicated. For those of you who have dealt with me behaving like that in the past, I'm sorry. I had no idea.
