The Guardian held the Summoner’s hand tight in his, pulling her along unfamiliar passages with a sense of urgency. Overhead, sirens are blazed and the lovers could hear the heavy sound of the boots of their pursuers behind them. Tidus didn’t stop. He couldn’t, one second and it could be the end of them.
One second and it could be the end of Yuna. The Guardians’ Code: Protect the Summoner even at the cost of one’s life. Tidus would gladly die for her, die to give her the chance to live. They ran, hand in hand, looking for an escape.
Yuna’s pace is slowed and her breathing was heavy and labored. They can’t stop though. Tidus pulled her, his own pace quickened as she began to fall behind. He tried to be gentle, but right now comfort is less important than life.
She tripped and in a moment Tidus was at her side, helping her to her feet and pulling her down a corridor. As they were running past a door, the thing opened to reveal no less than five Bevelle guards, all armed.
A bullet whistled past Tidus’ head and he immediately ducked, pulling Yuna down with him. “Run!” he urged her, letting go of her hand for a moment so that the pair of them could escape. He felt her hand slip into his own as they ran, and he gave it a tight squeeze.
A silent promise.
I won’t let you down.
They continued onwards, Tidus gasping for breath himself now, and it seemed they had run into a dead-end. Lights came up around them and Tidus gave a weary look to the weapons that were raised against him and his lover.
They were surrounded.
Yuna gave him a mournful look, she knew it as well and he pulled her close, trying to offer her comfort. The guards were not at all sympathetic to the lovers’ plight.
Gunfire was the last thing Tidus heard. He missed those three last words from his fallen lover, friend, and Summoner.
“I love you.” She had breathed.
And it was over.
He had failed.
…But then, it was just a dream, and not even his. Somewhere in the skies, onboard the Celsius, his Summoner was awakening with a start.
Her lover wasn’t there though to hold her and promise that it was all right.
