Cloud wasn't sure why he expected, even for the slightest moment, anything less than a grotesque parody of what a real Merry-Go-Round was supposed to look like.

The faintly creepy carousel music seemed to be mocking the wretched creatures impaled on the bars, which were bounced up and down and rotated like meat on the spit. From what Cloud knew with the aid of photos and illustrations and descriptions from those who'd been to the Gold Saucer, the merry-go-round was supposed to have brightly coloured statues of chocobos on, that anyone from age six to sixty could climb onto and ride round and round, round and round, to the painfully cheeful music.

These animals, however, were not chocobos. He didn't know what they were, only that they looked a little less like statues and a little more like hangings of still-wriggling meat with the skin flayed off, however, somehow still alive ( ... )

America was bored. There were had been exactly ZERO hamburgers at the midway.
Seriously, it was like the carnival was playing him for a fool.
Stuffing his hands into his pockets, he shuffled around, looking idly at the pretty attractions. Seeing that there was someone else there, he sidled over to the other figure, looking at the Carousel.

"Oh hey, it's a demon... horsey... ride." He gave Cloud a sidelong glance as if questioning whether or not he was actually crazy enough to ride the damned thing.

He gave a small jump of surprise, having been a little hypnotized for a few moments watching the creatures go around and around, and relaxed when he recognized America's familiar, expressive face.

"Horsey..." he mused aloud, letting the word roll off his tongue and glancing back to the carousel. The animals had reverted, yet again. "Is that what those things are called?"

"Um..."

America blinked at the rather childish word Cloud had used to describe the whirling ghost-carnival of death... thing.

"It is now! You uh, weren't thinking of riding on it were you?"

Wasn't that what he'd called the animals? Maybe not, maybe he'd been referring to something else. Cloud took another look, his distaste obvious. Sure, there were four-legged monsters on his world that resembled those... or maybe they were just like huge dogs... with hooves. Who knew.

He wrinkled his nose and shook his head slowly. "No.... I was just curious to see one." Gesturing half-heartedly at the structure, he added unsurely, "... I'm assuming an actual carousel looks less like a slaughterhouse,"

"Yeah, just about everything is backwards here." America waved his hand dismissively. "Man, we have the best carousels at my home. Maybe I'll take you there if we can get out of here."

He looked back to the whirling death machine. "You really don't have horses out where you're from?"

Horses. That sounded a little better. He'd thought 'horsies' sounded a little... kid-ish, like 'dogs' and 'doggies', but then he really hadn't been in a position to realise that before. Cloud looked at the pitiful creatures again, and squinted - if he concentrated hard, and used as much fo his imagination as he could, he could see that, quite possibly, they were quite elegant beasts.

"No... just chocobos," he explained, "they're... flightless birds, about the same size."

Feeling oddly curious apart from his usual disposition, Cloud wondered what other bais cidfferences there was between their worlds. "what's your home like, America?"

"Well..." America farted about for a moment, trying to get the appropriate words. "It's really big. So big, that the weather is different in different areas. There are always people coming in and out, but there's always a quiet place to stay if you need it. Parts of it once belonged elsewhere, but now our boundaries are pretty well settled."

His lips thinned slightly as he absently adjusted his glasses.

"Hm..." Cloud tugged at the collar of his shirt, taking a few deep, slightly frustrated breaths. It didn't feel much cooler outside than it was indoors. Wasn't the air supposed to get cooler at night?

His thoughts wondered to Midgar. There were a lot of people there... both above, and bellow. When he thought about the world as a whole, though, rolling hills and grasslands untouched by human settlement made up a majority of the place. And everywhere was always so far away from everywhere else... as for Nibelheim. He almost flinched in expectation of the pain in his chest, on remembering his hometown, but it didn't come.

"My village was small... tiny, really," And cold, always cold, not like this awful place. He really didn't want to keep the subject on himself, and wasn't even sure why he'd mentioned his old home. "Your place sounds nice. You must miss it a lot,"
