today I woke up at seven forty five, happy to not
have anything to do. I let snowflake out, got some juice
and went back to bed. As I burried myself back under
the heavy covers a picture of something hanging on my
fridge flashed through my head. "please call 888-blah blah balh
to see what time you need to report on february 13th"
frick. I throw off the covers and grab my phone. after dialing
I hear a pre-recorded message "group 02-06 is to report to the
courthouse at eight thirty for jury duty". I have a half an hour
to get dressed and get downtown waterloo. I accidentally
missed it last time and they sent me a letter about being
in contempt of court. so there goes my plan for sleeping in.
Out into the cold. No time to pre-start the car. snowing.
trying to do my hair in the rear view mirror. I get there on
time. there's about thirty of us crammed into the court room
everyone's reading something. Everyone smells like cigarettes and
hairspray. no one is happy. they keep telling us "fifteen more
minutes". I go feed the parking meter. Finally after an
hour of nothing the judge comes in and gives us a speech
on how important we are to the judicial
system but "the case was resolved in the lobby, you can all
go home". we all breath a collective sigh of relief and
annoyance and shuffle back out into the cold, back home to our beds.
so one reason to never commit a crime is the un-godly hour you
have to be in court.
also yesterday I saw my former best (fourth grade) friend
Amanda Valentine at UNI. she offered me a chip. It looked like
a plain old Lays but it tasted like fish. she said
"they don't have this kind in America. Crab chips. From Russia". weird.
