In this case I reckon it started out long before Hermione felt any real hope of Harry being her boyfriend, sometime back in First or Second Year when she was talking to Susan and Millie, and later Luna and Ginny. (and maybe the older girls who handed down the study room to them? That's assuming it came to them that way, rather than by Madam Pince seeing girls from disparate Houses together in the Library and giving them hints about a private room they could use,)
But it's definitely true. Amazing how many girls come out of the woodwork to show interest in a guy once he's got a girlfriend, right? Not that this is in any way duplicitous in their nature--it's just that they learn more about the guy, and start to see those good points.
Interesting. I'd never thought of it that way before. Then again, I'm not sure if I've ever experienced that "get a girlfriend, suddenly have other girls interested" thing, exactly.
Although now that I think of it my gf in high school, S., did have a couple of close female friends whom we'd hang out with to some degree, and one of them, L., did develop this passing obsession with seeing us kiss. S. was very shy, and I suppose at the time I thought L. was just kind of amazed that S. was actually in a relationship with an actual boy and that there might actually be actual kissing between us--they'd supposedly been part of a group known, at least to themselves, as "the Virgin Huntresses" in middle school. I'm not sure L. had ever dated anyone at that point, either, although S. had this weird tendancy to insist that L. was prettier than her, and to contradict me when I disagreed. I remember at least one time when L. was trying to sort of hug S. and me together and make us kiss, and I finally told her that if she wanted S. to be kissed right then in public she should do it herself. In a fanfic, of course, we'd have both snogged the bejeezus out of her, but such is life.
Yeah, the pirate ship's a been there, done that. I'd look forward to reading the sequel (not that that's a surprise).
Thank you! I reckon I'll have to think of a fantasy scenario that's cute, just a little bit excessive without being completely over the top, and feasible.
Then again, Elves, especially when bonded to powerful witches and wizards (and I get the feeling that, whatever the official state of things might have been, Dobby and Winky became able to draw off both Harry and Hermione as soon as they themselves were bonded, and I suspect this might have applied to the other four girls as well, at least to some degree), seem to be able to do almost anything they can imagine doing and think their humans would like. That pirate ship was probably built out of an existing vessel, but she might well have been an abandoned hulk that the elves in question got for nothing more than the trouble of hauling away.
I'd rather not get into the excesses of Orientalist fantasy, but one thought that occurs to me is the "Sultana shares her husband's harem" scenario that Hermione had apparently enjoyed imagining at one time or another. The Potters might well have a property in some warm region that Dobby and Winky could turn into a replica Moorish or Ottoman palace.
Thanks!
