Thank you so much!

: trust Ron to inhibit Ginny's gaining friends

That's always how I've seen Harry and Ginny not getting to know each other at all during his time at the Burrow in CoS. It can't have been only that she was so painfully shy.

was Harry's thought about using a spoon to take out a troll in any way an allusion to Ron's emotional depth?

Heh. Interesting thought. I don't think it was conscious, but that could've been somewhere in the back of his mind.

hopefully Ginny's seeing what kind of a friend Harry can be rather than just focusing on the fact that he's holding Hermione.

I do think she's seeing that at some level already. I'm not sure how much diary!Tom is influencing her yet, but I'd like to think that seeing Harry as someone who loves a girl and who obviously has time for other people as well, rather than as her big brother's friend who ignores her because he's busy being her big brother's friend, might help her in some way.

And I certainly haven't read very many, if at all, where the Grangers disown Hermione--interesting take on that relationship.

I've read one or two fics where the Grangers had issues with Hermione being a witch, but I had trouble believing them. I suppose that with this one I thought I'd try and see what I could do with the idea. Making them into a more extreme version of the parents of a couple of former girlfriends of mine* was the only approach I could think of that made any sense to me.

*I remember one of them saying "When I was seven and I did something bad, I was told 'You've broken the social contract.'"
