Never a dull moment, unfortunately.

Feck. My mother's just rang me to say that my da might be having a heart attack. She was visiting him at the rehabilitation centre when he said that he didn't feel right ( Read more... )

I'm so sorry, friend. I can imagine how you feel. Hold on. I'll be thinking of you and your dad.

*sending good vibes*

Thank you.

They seem to think it's because he was on a blood thinner, which made him anaemic. Apparently that can cause chest pains and heart attack-like symptoms. They'll keep him in hospital for a day or two, and assuming all goes well he'll go back to rehab after that.

Thank you.

He seems to be okay. He's in hospital, and will be, probably, for the next day or two; after that he'll be going back to the rehabilitation centre.

They're giving him two units of blood tonight, and they'll do a CT scan of the site of his surgery to see if there's anything gone wrong there. His haemoglobin counts were low, and his blood pressure as well; apparently he was on a blood thinner since the surgery and they seem to think that's a big part of why he started having heart attack-like symptoms.

Yikes. I hope he is well.

Thank you.

The doctors seem to be saying it's maybe because he's been on a blood thinner since the surgery and it's made him anaemic. They're giving him a transfusion, and they're going to do a CT scan of the site of the surgery. Once his haemoglobin levels and blood pressure are better he should be able to go back to the rehab centre, probably in a day or two.

It is!

He seems better able to concentrate on things like books than he was even in the rehab centre before the heart scare yesterday, which is a comfort. They say he'll likely be going back to rehab on Friday, or, just maybe, tomorrow.

Thank you. He seems to be all right, or at least he will be. We're told he's got low haemoglobin levels, which can apparently result in heart attack-like symptoms; his low blood pressure might be another factor, although I'm not sure if I'm understanding that correctly. He's been on a blood thinner since the surgery, and they say that taking him off that alone might fix matters, although they're going to do a CT scan of the site of the surgery as well.

I'm told he'll likely been in hospital for another day or two, and he'll be going back to the rehabilitation centre afterwards.

This is all very strange. A couple of days ago he said that now he only weighs about thirty pounds more than I do; I think this is the first time in my life that's ever been so. It's probably a healthier weight for him, but still, it's an odd feeling. It may be only bad posture, and so might be changing once he's feeling better, but I'm not sure he's taller than me anymore, either.

The things you describe *are* responsible for hear-attack-like symptoms. My co-worker's husband went to hospital in the summer over a similar issue. He has (and has had for a while) pretty bad diabetes, but is otherwise doing well following that incident.

I'm glad to hear your co-worker's husband is doing well. That's a comfort.

My da went pre-diabetic a couple of years ago, although he's managed so far to control it with diet.

Will do - though I'm glad to see from your responses that they think they know what's wrong.

Thank you.

It does seem as if they do know, or at least they've some idea.

He's had a CT scan of the site of the surgery and there doesn't seem to be any problem there, so they're looking into whether he's losing blood somewhere in the gastrointestinal system. He seems better able to focus on things like books than he was even in the rehab centre before the scare, which is a good sign. They say he'll probably be going back to rehab on Friday.
