“THAT BUTA!!!”
Yuri burst out her anger once she arrived at the cafeteria. Kei, who was accompanying her, handed a glass of orange juice that she managed to order before Yuri dragged her to sit and heard her ranting. Hoping that it would distract her even only a minute.
Yuri sipped the juice hurriedly, as if she was watering the flame inside her. Glad that was still early after the lunch break bell rang, so the canteen wasn’t really crowded. Otherwise they would become the limelight since Yuri hasn’t stop grumbling yet.
“Baka, baka, baka, BAKA BUTA!” She cursed her boyfriend wholeheartedly. Her right hand was gripping on the glass tightly. Kei initiatively snatch it before Yuri break the glass and she has to pay double for orange juice and the broken glass.
“Yeah. But still, you love that baka buta.” Said Kei flat. Every time Ryosuke did something that disappoint her, Yuri would be upset and the last thing that happen, Kei always be the one who would hear her rant.
And today’s happening, just like the other day. Like yesterday, the day before yesterday, the past three days, as always. Something that had happened before, almost like a routine if she has to categorize it.
They were walking on the school corridor when Ryosuke and his batch pass. Like usual, he would walk ahead as if he doesn’t notice Yuri. He didn’t even turn his head much more to greet her. He passed just like that. Like a pig walking on its line.
Yuri? She followed his game, acting like she didn’t see him. Walked ahead, pretending that she was chatting animatedly when they bumped. But right at the moment Ryosuke’s figure disappear from her sight, she would begin to yell. Let out her disappointment and cursing her cold boyfriend.
***
Well, to think of it. What’s up with this couple? They have a very different personality. You can say that Yuri is an enchanting princess while Ryosuke not more than no one. Yes, no one. Since he is not the school idol or something. He just a mere ordinary student. Oh maybe a little bit below ordinary.
Yuri is a school princess. She is natural beauty, kind, friendly and smart. No doubt about it because she is the 2nd rank in the whole school, every year. Well, she always aimed to be the number one but unfortunately, the guy who occupy the 1st position is extremely hard to beat.
Well, to be exact, she is the school idol. Every guy in the school want to be her boyfriend. Even so many senpai and kouhai had confessed to her. That just… Yuri was in love with that certain someone. Someone that even teacher sometimes didn’t notice him was in their class. Someone that made Kei freaked out when Yuri admit her special feeling towards that certain boy. Someone that mostly invisible.
The boy is not a geek nor mute. He was just didn’t have anything to be notice by other. Well, he handsome though, one of his batch best friend also the most popular guy on the school, the most wanted boyfriend, Nakajima Yuto. He is just too quiet that people usually didn’t mind his presence. He also not smart nor active in the class. He barely talked to people, and if you ask something to him, he would give you the shortest answer in the world you could think. He didn’t join any club and rarely went to canteen. No one knows his background so far.
He is also shy. Too shy to be a boy. He always leaned his head when he is walking alone, avoiding to meet with other’s gaze. That’s a miracle that he had never bump into someone. You can say that his only friends are Nakajima Yuto, Morimoto Ryutaro and Okamoto Keito; three popular guys in the school, since he always stick to them and no one ever saw he initiate a talk to someone outside that batch. It’s indeed a mystery, about how came he be friend with them. He is like a lost piggy among the cute puppy.
Well, after all of that description, we can conclude that he is a perfect introvert being.
What made them a couple?
It’s Yuri. Blame her cheerful personality and the feeling she has that always want to know other deeper. They were classmate in the 1st grade. Noticing Ryosuke’s weird attitude, Yuri gladly volunteered herself to be his first friend. Her intention was good though, she wanted to change him to be more open towards others, not always spacing out in the corner.
The attempt was positive. Ryosuke accepted her idea of being friend immediately. From there, Yuri would regularly greet him every morning, which Ryosuke replied with small nod. Yuri didn’t give up, although Ryosuke hadn’t show any progress, at last he would respond whenever she greet him.
The situation was static. Even until summer break coming, Ryosuke was still ‘his self’; quiet and invisible. That brought Yuri headache, knowing her effort for months hadn’t earn anything. Gathering all courage that she has, Yuri braved herself to ask his number and exchange email address. Glad Ryosuke agreed to it. If it was not, she didn’t know where put her face and hide from him.
She knew, she’s acting weird. Why she care so much about him while he himself seemed like he enjoy being his self? Why she wanted to change him while he himself didn’t mind it? Why did she do her best to find way to make other student talk to him? Why she wanted them to notice him? Without realizing that, she has kept her eyes on him.
Why? She ask herself. And she get the answer.
It was summer break, when she suddenly felt bored at home. Kei was visiting her granny in their hometown, she didn’t has anyone else that she could ask for going out. She spent days wandering around her big house. From her room to the living room, then to the kitchen, helping her mother cooked when she was in the mood. Sometimes she would come to the back yard, feeding goldfishes that her parents kept in small pond.
She missed going to school. She missed the sensation of waking up in the morning. When the alarm clock rang so loud and she get up just to shut it, sleeping back. Then her mother would come and drag her off to the bathroom. That’s when she totally woke up from sleep.
She missed eating lunch in the cafeteria, walking side by side with Kei, exposing the difference height they have. They look like mother and daughter when they do that, Yuri would seriously call her by “kaa-chan” sometimes, earning a pinch on her cheeks that she replied by giggling.
She missed to greet Ryosuke early in the morning, declaring that she was the first person who talked to him every day. She likes to tease him. Whenever teacher asked her to point other student to continue reading after her, she would mention Ryosuke, earning a shock expression from the latter, more precisely, he half-glared to her. But of course, he never really did.
Oneday, on English subject, they got a task to write a story, that they would read in front of class later to examine their pronounce. Being a drama addict she is, she immediately got a nice idea and wrote a love story. The main character was Yamada Ryosuke. She chose him on purpose, of course.
“These day, I feel someone is watching over me. Even I never caught him, I could feel his eyes glued at my back, glimpsing at me from the back seat.”
The moment Yuri read her writing in front class, everyone in class turned their attention to last table in row near the window, Ryosuke’s whereabouts, as if asking for confirmation. What Yuri wrote was a love story about a guy who become a secret admirer of his classmate. And the girl is herself: Chinen Yuri. Yuri smirked a little, she wasn’t plan to make the guy shy, she just want their classmate notice his existence. That sly plan was a great success.
Since then, one by one of their classmate approach him. Trying to make a conversation with him. Yuri didn’t know what was their motive, maybe they believe what she wrote the other day was true, and they tried to dig information from him, since Yuri refuse to say a thing. Yuri felt happy with the change, but also sad in the same time.
She expected Ryosuke to be mad at her with what she did, because she was embarrassing him that time. But Ryosuke’s attitude towards her just the same, shy and cold like usual, no changing even a bit. She thought Ryosuke would avoid her after that day, but he remained the same. He would respond her greeting, answering when she ask something, and the most annoying, never bring up the topic about that day ever again.
What’s wrong with him? Again, Yuri asked herself.
She thought about the possible answer for a moment. But then… The question was changed.
What’s wrong with me? She snapped at herself.
Why do I feel disappoint when he act like that? Aren’t I supposed to be relief because he wasn’t mad and snap at me?
Could it be… I’m sad because I was failed to gain more attention from him? Is that… so?
Then it mean…
Yuri shook her head repeatedly. No, it can’t be true! How come I, Chinen Yuri, the school princess, the most wanted girlfriend, fall in love with a weird, mute, and clumsy boy? Shaking her head again. Wait, what? Did I just I’m in love with him? She was making a horror face, surprised with her own thought. No no, no…! She refused to admit the feeling.
But of course, she can’t deny it forever. By intense contact with Ryosuke since they become textmates, it make it harder for Yuri. However, she’s not someone who could endure her feeling. She’s expressive. After a long consideration, she decided to confess to him. Yeah, she’s the one who confess, but who thought? It revealed that Ryosuke also has special feelings towards her. He is a coward that why he didn’t confess.
The news about their relationship instantly spread when the school begins. The whole school has know about them become a couple and some students came to Yuri to confirm the gossip. Yuri just nodded her head with a shy smile that almost made some of her fanboys fainted.
Some of them happy to know of it, some other just shrugged, some more even pray for them to lasts long, but there’s also people who didn’t bless them. They mostly Yuri’s fanatic fans. Yuri took it lightly.
What made her irritate, even the whole school had known, Ryosuke’s behavior haven’t change. He is just the same. A man with robotic gesture. He never greeted Yuri, not even once. He never talk to her at school, he never invite her to go to canteen together, he never walk her home. They just the same, like a stranger.
With that attitude of him, people start to doubt the fact about them dating. Yeah, who would believe it if they act cold to each other? For three months, they stayed like that. It’s too long if you want to consider it as ‘love quarrel’. They must have broken up. That what’s they thought.
Until the second grade and they separate class, nothing much change, except their relationship that look more awkward than before. Somehow, Yuri was getting enough of it, and that was her limit. She went home with sour face and ignored Ryosuke along the day.
She was seriously irritated with her boyfriend coldness. That day before went to sleep, she texted Ryosuke, wanting to break up.
Ryosuke, you don’t really love me. Do you?
Maybe you just pitying me that’s why you accept my feelings that day.
But now I realize, my feeling is unrequited. You don’t love me. I can say that by your attitude, you don’t return my feelings.
So, let’s end it here.
Oyasumi~
PS: If you do love me, then prove it!
YOUR FRIEND,
Chinen Yuri
Without waiting for the guy reply, she drifted into dreamland.

“YURI, I LOVE YOU!”
Someone shouted from outside the class. Hearing her name, Yuri grabbed Kei’s wrist and come out immediately.
They both stunned in the class door. What she saw made her heart almost jumped out from her mouth.
There, standing Ryosuke right before her eyes. A huge pink teddy bear doll was in his hand. He was staring at her nervously, keeping his gaze on her.
“Yuri, I love you,” he mouthed the same thing as previous one, “so much.” Then he handed her the teddy bear, which Yuri received with her trembling hand.
A loud claps heard then, snapping Yuri back to reality. Moments ago when seeing Ryosuke standing proudly in front her, she was forget that they were in school, and students watching them.
She observed the surrounding and found Yuto, Ryutaro also Keito were standing behind Ryosuke. Yuto was grinning widely at her when they gaze met. Ryutaro holding a red carton with “YURI, I LOVE YOU” written on it. He lifted it above his head when Yuri gaze averted to him, so she could take a better look. It was Ryosuke’s handwriting. Yuri recognized it. While Keito, he brought a guitar. Yuri was wondering what Keito would do with his guitar when Ryosuke sounded again.
“Yuri, I’m here to prove that I love you so much.” He stared at her deeply. Yuri can’t help but feeling nervous with it. Her heart was beating fast. “Don’t be mad anymore. I want to see your smile.”
Silence.
All that Yuri could hear is her own heartbeat.
Ryosuke walked closer to her, Yuri’s eyes widen. Oh no! What is he going to do?
“Yuri, please be mine once again…” Ryosuke extended his hand.
That when Yuri heard faints sound from the surrounding as the guitar played by Keito.
“So sweet…”
“Chinen Yuri is such a lucky girl.”
“If only my boyfriend could be that romantic…”
“Ah, I had never thought that Yamada guy could do something like this!”
“So they are really a couple?”
Few steps more, Ryosuke would reach her. Yuri was panicking. What should I do? What should I do? She shriek on her mind, while the audience also squealing noisily as if they were witnessing their favorite idol life acting for a drama.
Oh no! Is he going to kiss me in front of them??? Yuri freaked out once she noticed Ryosuke’s gesture. She reflected pushing the latter and runaway.
“Kyaaa… Ryosuke, you’re embarrassing me!” She cried out while making her way to rest room. Palms were on the face covering her red blushing cheeks.
