August 3 - Day 9 - Queenstown to Te Anau

Aug 20, 2009 22:06

I apologise in advance to those on dial-up...

Woke up to a beautiful morning. This pic was taken from the hotel balcony at 6:45am.

Leaving Queenstown 8:17am

Stopped for second breakfast and to buy some lunch at the Five Rivers Café

...and while the exterior didn’t look like much more than a large shed

...the inside was very attractive and cosy, albiet a tad smoky.

...on the road again heading toward Fangorn Forest.

“The forest is old, very old, and full of memory.”

Triane played the part of Shadowfax fabulously… *whistles*

…on the road again, making a slight detour

...to cross a swing bridge.

Check out it’s complex design! We’re a fearless bunch, for sure!

Heading toward the Upper Mavora Lakes.

The log Merry & Pippin hid in before Frodo left the fellowship

...and the tree that Frodo used to hide from the Orcs. See where Elijah would have placed his nice pert bum? :)

Upper Mavora Lake where Frodo and Sam paddled away to next stage of their journey.

Annwyn55 has a much better pic than this.

In the afternoon we went on a jet boat down the River Anduin.

Just because...

Later that night we went on a glow worms cave tour. After walking and dodging low ceilings through the illuminated cave that had gushing waterfalls, we all piled into a canoe and paddled to an unlit part of the cave to see hundreds of brightly lit "stars." It was stunningly beautiful to see. Just as well Ladysunrope and I found out much later that we had worm slobber on our hats!
