The significance is that in California, we have two seasons: atrociously dry with spells of fog, and somewhat less dry with spells of rain. The first rainstorm of autumn signifies that we are coming upon the latter of the two, which is my personal favourite. Also, I love rain. Rain means less chance of fire. Rain means not as much drought. Rain means I'm more likely to get a ride to and from the bus stop, and it also means that I am going to be able to wear jeans and not suffer from overheating.
