Paint Nites 26-28: Angel, Rose and Celtic tree

Mar 18, 2021 20:57

I did two Paint Nites in January that I never posted about, plus a third one last weekend. I'm doing another one this coming weekend, but before this gets even more ridiculously photo-heavy, let me at least do these first three ( Read more... )

I really do think that the virtual paint nites have been a really *good* thing to come out of this pandemic - I can't imagine that they would have been pushed to do this without it, but the fact that within a couple of months after starting virtual events, they were saying "these are not going away after we start back with in-person events" - makes it clear that people have embraced them!

I *love* your angel - I think the blues are perfect and she's a bit more solid than the sample, but that's not a bad thing - the original is almost too ethereal - it takes effort to "see" the figure in the background. I definitely like yours better than the original!

These rose paintings - I have looked at that one a few times and never jumped on it - it's too bad that the instructor didn't give you the specific directions. This one definitely seems like you need detailed instructions - where to put the darker shadows, where to put highlights - where to blend etc. Your *shapes* are definitely there though - it's just more abstract than super detailed. Which - isn't what you were hoping for, I know.

The black and white rose with Yulia is one that I was considering - she is a really good teacher - but I haven't decided yet. Actually she has a colourful rose on May 9th as well as a black/white one on May 23rd. I've done a black and white rose painting - I struggled with the blending...but ....I do have my magic blending brush now...oooh... :D

Now you see the problem with my not having painted the blue in behind where the grass was - you could see exactly where I had and hadn't painted underneath.

I had to laugh, because, yes, yes, I feel your pain. I have done that SO MANY TIMES - either leaving a space, or not being careful enough when roughing in a line or a background and ending up with a dark colour where a light paint is going to end up going - or having a "hard" line where ultimately it needed to be soft, and having a straight line that I spend the next 45 minutes trying to fix :D

was the rose teacher "Emerald"? I have looked at a few of her classes, but haven't jumped on any. Can I ask who was your celtic tree instructor - I think I want to avoid her :D

I am impressed with your celtic tree painting - I think your grass ended up looking perfect, nestled in the roots - and the highlights are definitely *key* - I'm glad you figured them out! And I agree - yours is balanced better - the division between "above" and "below" shouldn't be the middle of the canvas - it needed to be where you put it!

The Celtic tree teacher's name is Amy Young, from Idaho. Like I said, she was very sweet, but her sense of pacing and level of instruction was way off. She did try to check in, saying she didn't want anyone to get to the end and not have had any fun, so to speak up if there were issues but just ... yeah, I don't think I'll try her again.

The rose teacher was Ne-Col Simon.

I'm glad you liked my angel! I liked making her something other than a white blonde. ;-)

Wow, you look at dates WAAAY further ahead than I do. I look about 2 weeks ahead and leave it at that. I'll see about the black and white rose with Yulia once May rolls around - it should be between my spring and summer terms so I should have some time!

Oh I haven't done any paintings with Amy Young. I actually had a class with Ne-Col - my red cardinals on the branch winter painting was with her - I thought she did a reasonable job for that painting. But the rose is ...a lot more complicated!

Hah - I look at EVERYTHING. Yulia posts stuff out months in advance - this is definitely her full time job!

I liked my previous class with Ne-Col (the Polynesian dancer) just fine. She just wasn't quite as forthcoming with instructions for this, alas.
