Happy Mother's Day!

May 11, 2020 07:29

I posted this last night to DW, but apparently cross-posting has died again?

To all my friends who are mothers, or are mother-like figures (ie to their students): Happy Mother's Day! To those who wish(ed) to be mothers but aren't, or who have troubled relationships with their moms, or who have lost their moms, just know I'm sending you big big hugs. <3

I had a good day today, a nice reprieve from the frustrations of Virus!Life. My kids did nice things for me, and I received exceptionally nice gifties. The one gift I was completely informed about, in advance, was my new cell phone (Galaxy S20) - because Will had to ask me which model, precisely, which color, etc, I wanted. Alas, I hadn't decided for sure about a case until today so I'm going to have to be super super careful with it for the next week, and try not to take it out of my pocket over hard floors/concrete, etc. So, anyway, Will kindly did the initial setup and transfer of information for me, and I spent a lot of time trying to get new ringtones and texttones set up. To my great annoyance NONE of my old sounds (from my S7) are still options, so it's going to be awhile before I recognize certain tones for certain people. I'm especially annoyed about the tones for Will and for my friend Jen, because those were constants for the past several phones - and those are two of the people I text the most.

I lost my status in Word Cookies, which, you know, isn't the end of the world but it IS damn annoying, given how far I'd gotten in the game. I still need to log into Yahtzee and see if I lost anything there as well.

Haven't yet played around with the three cameras, to see what different things they do. Still trying to get the hang of how the phone functions, as well - no home button, things arranged differently....

Will also got me flowers. :-)

From Two I received an awesome wooden tabletop easel, with storage inside for the art supplies. I accidentally made him give me my gift last night, because I went to go paint Karen's card, and ... all my paint was missing. Because he'd put it into the easel to show how it all went together. So, he had to go get it and give it all to me last night. Oops. But I love it! He also bought some cute stickers from Redbubble with "Ravenpuff" emblems, and Stucky and other fannish images. This morning he also gave me a blank sketchbook for which he'd drawn his own covers, and taped inside a really lovely, appreciative note. And - at my request - he made waffles for breakfast (both GF and regular).

MiniPlu gave me a silver pendant I had recently discovered and admired: this silver adoption symbol, which I've now added to the other pendants I always wear around my neck.

R&K bought me two Kindle books off my wishlist, which was totally unnecessary - they don't usually do gifts for this sort of thing. But it was still very kind.

As for the rest of the day - I still did laundry, and I made lemon squares for dessert, and MiniPlu coaxed me out for a run - she's been running 1 mile and I ran 4. Will handled dinner, Rob mowed the lawn, and I had some time in the afternoon to relax a little bit. Not a lot of downtime, but it didn't feel like a rushed, busy day, either. I have no complaints about today at all, really. Definitely one of the better Mother's Days - especially given some of the chafing I've had with both kids lately. Oh, and yes, I was nice to my own mom, too: I sent her flowers, cute socks and a card, and we Zoom-chatted with her today as well.

I usually get Karen a "Mother's Day from the cat" sort of card, but the grocery store's selection was limited to one "meh" card, so I decided to paint her one, venturing on my own for the first time. I was inspired by this painting:

Which I thought was cute and not too complicated. I did my best painting the background as I saw it on a ~5x7" (~12.5x17.5cm) piece of paper, and then painting in four cats, rather than three, in the color markings of our four remaining cats. The snail isn't too obvious, and Nick (the one with the half-gray face) looks rather mouse-like, but I'm otherwise pleased, especially given I was doing this all on my own.

A bonus for me today was that I heard from a HS friend I haven't heard from in years - she texted me out of the blue to wish me a Happy Mother's Day and we had a nice text exchange, doing a quick catch-up.

I spent a little time this weekend starting to get my ducks in a row for applying to library school - I found the links I'll need to request transcripts, I started writing my personal statement (oy, still needs work). I'm going to need to write a resume, which I haven't had to do since, uh ... 1999? O_o

I'm still not 100% sure I SHOULD go to library school, but I guess I could apply and ... see?

Tomorrow: taking my car for an oil change. How do I make sure the steering wheel and gearshift are clean afterwards?

Oh: one last thing. I recently made this very simple tomato soup and it was pretty darn tasty, actually. Recommended if you want a quick homemade soup and have a stick blender/food processor.
