Milton is actually very freakin' sweet. It's lamentable that he's been a classic for so long and is no longer on the curriculum. Hell, if you walked up to a random person on the street and asked what Paradise Lost was, they'd probably go OLOLZ I LUV TAHT SHO!!!!11 WIF TEH AIRPLAIN WUT KRAHSED.

But I digress. Here's a little passage from Paradise Lost; Satan's just been caught in Eden (whispering into Eve's ear, no less!) by Gabriel, who asks him why he has escaped from Hell (IV, 885-901):

To whom thus Satan with contemptuous brow.
"Gabriel, thou hadst in Heav'n th'esteem of wise,
and such I held thee; but this question askt
Puts me in doubt. Lives there who loves his pain?
Who would not, finding way, break loose from Hell,
Though thither doom'd? Thou wouldst thyself, no doubt,
And boldly venture to whatever place
Farthest from pain, where thou mightst hope to change
Torment with ease, and soonest recompense
Dole with delight, which in this place I sought;
To thee no reason; who know'st only good,

Translation: Said Satan, "Uhh... are you retarded or something? Why the fuck wouldn't I want to bust out of Hell? You'd understand if you weren't such a fucking narc. Oh, and God? Pfft. If he'd wanted me to stay, he should've tried harder. This is all whack though, 'cause see, I didn't even touch that Eve bitch."
