So, with a new year comes a new outlook on life (or so the saying goes. Do I believe it? We'll see, shan't we?)
In any case, looking back at the year that was 2008, the year that was 2008 was more of an emotional roller-coaster than anything I've ever been through in my nineteen years of life. Seriously. Let's see...it started last January. I was depressed...almost severely so, although Ill never understand why (probably because life was moving FAR TOO FAST), but the point is that last January 16 I seriously considered ending it all. This is super freaky because...well, you don't get a second chance at life, you know what I mean? So thankfully family pulled me out of my slump, only for it to resurface again in April with severe, severe anxiety and panic attacks. We moved from my comfortable moderately-sized city in May to a HUGE center, taking me away from my home and my friends of twelve years and throwing me into a crazy new environment where I knew NOBODY. And I'm practically chronically shy, although being in drama has opened me up, so this was DAUNTING. Got a job, had an okay summer (which included proving myself to my boss. Not fun) and then came university, which basically screwed me over in every way, shape and form to the point where I had to apply for a completely different school and a completely different program for next year. Those were the downs.
Now for the ups. I have my job again next year and met wonderful, wonderful people, and (provided I get into the program I'm now applying for) will have a better shot at taking something that will actually benefit me in the future.
And now, for the anime ups: I've discovered several new and good anime series this previous year, so here I goez:
Death Note-started this in the midst of my depression. I know that doesn't quite add up, but something about knowing that there are people more messed up than I am out there (even if they are fictional) helped. And now with the hype about the English Death Note movie (Zac Efron as Light? Really?) and the surprisingly well-done English dub, I'm glad I got into it. And, as predicted, pretty much my favorite character (besides L. Oh, Kappei-san, why must you be so awesome?) has 30 SECONDS OF SCREENTIME. AND I LOVE HIM. Yes, minor characters as my weakness, it seems...
Ouran High School Host Club: Gack. Just...I just about fell over when I first started watching this. Because it's complete and utter crack, and yet...the characters are so engaging and believable, and while it's practically a parody of shoujo romantic shows, it turns into its OWN show and the characters, as I've said are incredible. And the art. THE ART. THE SHOW IS SO. DARN. PRETTY. You have to see it. The colours, the character design, the LEGS. THEIR LEGS GO ON FOREVER. AND THEY'RE ALL (BASICALLY) HOT. as;ldkfja;slkdgjalsk. There's my reaction. Go watch it. Really. And not-so-surprisingly, my favorite characters (while not minor) are sane. Which, based on the complete craziness of this show, is somewhat amazing in itself. Kyouya has corrupted me with his hotness, I swear...plus his character is like...deep. And Kaoru. Oh, Kaoru, you are the cutest thing. Someone once said that, although they're identical, Kaoru is cute and Hikaru is hot. And I agree. Although Hika tends to get that moody-almost-emo-teenager thing goin' on sometimes. Look at me ramble! I'm also a HUGE fan of Mozart, so hearing them use his music in the show was AWESOME. I also play the piano, so Tamaki also gets love from me. And, of course, being the yaoi freak that I am...the SUBTLETIES WILL BLOW YA MIND. *Luffs*
And then, in the summer, I discovered (dun-dun-dun)...
ONE PIECE. Which I don't even NEED to go into detail about, because it is AWESOME and LOVE and PROBABLY THE BEST ANIME SERIES OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. It mixes everything so well...humor and drama and kick-butt action sequences and engaging characters and engaging SIDE characters and incredible villains and a story that GOES ON FOREVER and yet STILL HAS NOT BECOME BORING and...my parents completely understand my anime obsession. I used to think they didn't, and suddenly they're all like uber-accepting. Which shocks me. But One Piece. ONE PIECE. Once again, my three favorite characters are...maybe surprising, but they seem to have a common theme, which is going to sound incredibly strange, but it's really the only way I can connect them (besides the fact that they're all amazing fighters. That's a given). The connecting factor is...they're all capable of being extremely polite. Yeah, I know it's strange, but there you have it:)
AND SANJI, MY LOVE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAILURE HAS NO BOUNDS. Sanji is my...yeah, the guy's great. *Luffs some more* Sanji in glasses is more love. Hem. Moving on, shall we? Ace. Who has drawn me in somehow and made me love him, and I do. I do. Which is why the manga right now scares me a little. AND...what's not to love about a sword-wielding, geometrical herbivore? Really, now? Kaku, the little devil, has somehow ALSO managed to make my love him. Gah, why must he be so awesome? I have a five-foot tall nameless giraffe that I refused to lose in the move and totally clashes with my Parisian/movie-themed room but I love dearly and have had for years without naming him, and he is now Kaku. That's all.
I love all of the Strawhats, of course (that goes without saying!) but there are my oddities.
So, here's to 2009! Happy New Year, everyone!
