Chapter Seven
XXXVII.
He doesn’t move much for the next day, content to lay in bed for the day as Kurt eventually leaves to go to the garage for a couple of hours, but when nightfall rolls around he realizes he’s starting to get a little hungry so he stomps up the stairs for dinner, slinging an arm around Kurt’s shoulders and bending to kiss his cheek before realizing that he’d just done that in front of their parents.
“Um. I mean…” he stammers and Kurt’s blushing a little, looking down at his plate, and Burt’s eyes are wide and his mother is trying to hide a smile and crap, way to go, Finn.
“Sit down, honey,” his mother implores, handing him a plate. “And eat up. I know you’re hungry.”
Burt’s still staring at him like he wants to say something but it seems his actions are going to go ignored for the moment, a fact that he’s more than a little grateful for.
He’s got to be more careful, though.

“What was that for?” Kurt asks later, pulling his shirt off and scrounging through Finn’s drawer for one of his old t-shirts to wear to bed.
“Just…felt like it,” Finn admits, because that’s the honest truth.
“Stop ‘feeling like it,’” Kurt mutters, standing up with a shirt in his hand. “I’m surprised my father didn’t mention anything but I think he’s afraid of Carole. Still…”
“Look, I’m sorry, okay?” Finn’s across the room before he can remember moving, hands spreading over Kurt’s flat stomach and pressing against the bare skin and Kurt shivers and leans back against him. “I don’t…it’s like the Wolf…”
“I’m your mate, aren’t I? The Wolf thinks…” Kurt shudders. “Finn, I can’t…”
“I know. I’m trying to…to control him, but sometimes I don’t think I can. I’m sorry,” he bends and kisses Kurt’s shoulder, the skin warm and smooth under his lips. “I really am, Kurt.”
“I know,” Kurt nods. “I know, and I know you’re doing what you can just…not with the parents around.”
“I’ll try,” Finn hugs him and repeats the words in a whisper, Kurt safe and calm in his arms.
Really, trying is all he can do.
XXXVIII.
“How bad does it get?” Kurt asks later that night, Finn restless in the darkness probably because he’d been sleeping all day, and Kurt’s been wired since dinner because he’d been expecting his father to come down to give them The Talk although, to his great relief, that hasn’t happened yet. “The Wolf, I mean. How bad do you…does it…want me?”
“Bad,” Finn replies. “Sometimes. Right now he’s fairly calm, but maybe that’s because you’re close.”
“Not very comforting,” Kurt admits, squeezing Finn’s hand and finally twining their fingers together as Finn kisses the back of his neck, trailing his tongue down to Kurt’s exposed shoulder and lapping gently. “Mm…”
“That okay?”
“Yeah. It’s nice. I’m just…”
“I know,” Finn promises. “I’m still in control of myself except for when there’s a full moon, so I might get urges but so far I can control them. I don’t…I mean, I don’t think they’ll get any stronger, but right now it’s worse when I’m not around you than when I am.”
“It’s all the Wolf, though,” Kurt mutters, because it’s still a sore spot for him. If Finn were in complete control of himself he’d never imagine even kissing Kurt, let alone having sex with him.
And Kurt’s not ready for that, probably won’t be for years.
“Yeah,” Finn sounds mildly apologetic as he keeps tasting Kurt’s skin, and it’s intimate without being arousing as Kurt surrenders to the other boy’s touch, deciding that, true or not, he’ll take whatever he can get from Finn.
It’s not going to last, so he may as well make the most of it.
He turns around and catches Finn’s lips in a kiss much less hesitant than any they’ve shared so far and Finn makes a murmured noise of surprise into his mouth before kissing him back, mouth opening and it’s slow, wet heat and Kurt moans without meaning to, shifting his hips a little.
Finn laughs shortly and deepens the kiss, tongues brushing in a way that makes Kurt shiver as Finn’s hands skim under his shirt and hold him steady, warm and heavy against his back.
No, Kurt has no idea how much of this he’ll get, but right now, he’s quite sure he never wants it to end.
XXXIX.
“So, have you heard the news about the Lima Werewolf?” Mercedes asks a couple of days later over coffee and Kurt almost, almost spits his own out because that was not what he was expecting her to ask.
“The-the what?” he squeaks, swallowing too much of the burning liquid, and she gives him a strange look in return.
“Lima Werewolf. Didn’t you hear the stories like ten years ago they shot a rabid wolf in town and nobody knew where it came from? Everybody always thought it was a werewolf, and for the past few months people’ve said they’ve heard a wolf howling on full moon nights so maybe we’ve got another one,” she looks excited at the prospect and Kurt doesn’t know how to react. Of course Mercedes can be trusted, but he’s not telling anybody without Finn’s say-so.
“Oh, Mercedes, you shouldn’t believe those ghost stories. It was probably just a dog that got out of its yard,” he says lightly, hoping she can’t read what he’s really feeling. “Besides, werewolves don’t exist. It’s preposterous. That would mean there’s a person around here that’s really a werewolf, and you think that would be obvious.”
Or not, a tiny voice in his head tells him and he narrows his eyes and tries to ignore it. “What if it’s true, though? What if…d’you think we’d get money if we captured it?”
“Mercedes!” Kurt squawks, a little loudly, and she looks shocked. “Look, if…and only if…there’s a werewolf, it’s still a human being. How would you like it if it were you that was captured for money?!”
She blinks at him before starting a little, leaning back, and heaving a sigh. “You’re right. I could never do that to a person. But what if somebody does? What if there is somebody that’s in danger?”
“It’s not our concern,” he snaps, trying desperately to change the subject and eventually they move on, but Kurt has to warn Finn that people are a lot closer to figuring out everything than they’d originally thought.
And that’s not comforting at all.
XL.
“We’ve got a problem,” Kurt storms into the room, dropping his bag and flopping on the bed beside Finn as the other boy turns to look at him.
“What’s up, man?”
“Mercedes, as you well know, is about the most reliable source of gossip in Ohio and she has informed me that in recent months the stories of the ‘Lima Werewolf’ have made a resurgence,” Kurt waits for a second, wanting to see if Finn gets it, and by the way his eyes darken and his breathing quickens he obviously does.
“No. No, they can’t…how…we’ve been careful, Kurt!” his whole body is tense as he sits up and Kurt clicks his tongue and pulls him back down, cupping his cheek and trying to get him to stay focused.
“Shh, calm down,” he soothes, trying to project confidence although he’s as worried as Finn is. “We’ll have to soundproof the shed, make sure nobody will hear you when you’re in there. And I suppose it doesn’t help that you roamed the streets a couple of months ago…I’m still thankful nobody saw you and…” he pauses and swallows, his carefully crafted shell falling apart as tears spring into his eyes.
“Hey,” Finn grips his fingers lightly, clasping their hands. “I’m fine. And I’m…it scares me, Kurt, because the last werewolf…they killed him! I mean, yeah, he bit me, but who knows who he was?”
“We can’t think like that. You’re going to be fine,” Kurt says fiercely and Finn gives him a tremulous smile and kisses him, Kurt allowing it to go farther than he normally would because he’s that worried.
If people have been noticing, it’s only a matter of time before they figure out where Finn is, and if they do…
“Hey. We’ll figure it out,” Finn says quickly, and Kurt thinks how absurd it is that they’re both trying to reassure each other when they’re both falling apart so badly, but he nods and lets Finn kiss him again, hands clasped loosely and bodies pressed together, and for the moment he can forget that there’s anything other than this.
XLI.
“This is bad,” Kurt tells Finn a couple of days later, staring at his laptop and typing furiously as the taller boy sinks onto the bed beside him and hooks his chin over Kurt’s shoulder, staring at the screen.
“What?”
“Mercedes is right about this ‘Lima Werewolf’ thing. There’re Facebook groups and blogs dedicated to finding it…some people are offering rewards for…” he gulps and clicks away from the page because he doesn’t even want to think about that but Finn clues in to his hesitance and kisses his cheek, holding him tighter. “…For your pelt,” he finishes with a shudder and Finn laughs into his ear. “Yes, Finn, the thought of you being skinned is highly amusing!”
“Dude, it wouldn’t work,” Finn murmurs softly. “Remember? I change back in the sunlight.”
“Doesn’t help if it’s done before they realize that,” Kurt pokes his arm and Finn growls in mock-annoyance but his posture stiffens and Kurt knows he’s far more worried than he’s letting on. “But this is bad, Finn. I’ve read through all the speculations and nothing seems to peg you as being from this part of town, but if somebody hears you howling…”
“But what can we do? I mean, I’ve been a werewolf for over ten years and nothing so far, so why now?”
“Who knows how these things happen, but the point is, you’re in danger,” Kurt squeezes Finn’s fingers this time, leaning back against his sturdy frame and closing his eyes. “I’ll keep checking these boards out, make sure that people don’t start deciding they need to look in this part of town. If they do we’ll have to start taking measures to make sure nobody will ever suspect.”
“Kurt,” Finn’s voice is tiny now, scared, and Kurt hates hearing him so vulnerable. “I’m…I’m trying not to be afraid here, but it’s hard, dude. I mean…I know they’d kill me, I know they’d…”
“Shh…” Kurt shushes him, part of him just wanting Finn to stop talking because he’s scared enough already, and Finn listens, lips pressed to the side of Kurt’s neck as Kurt tries to relax into his embrace and forget about everything else.
It doesn’t really work, but he lets himself believe it will.
If only for a few minutes.
XLII.
Finn’s lying awake that night, Kurt curled up on his chest and snoring near-silently in a way that’s just kind of endearing as opposed to annoying, and he strokes a hand down the other boy’s back and thinks.
He’s scared out of his mind.
Who wouldn’t be?
Yeah, he knows that for the most part he’s safe but that one night a month…if anybody figures it out…who knows what’ll happen? If they try to capture him, he’ll fight back…well, the Wolf will fight back, he probably won’t remember anything about it.
And what if he bites somebody? What if he dooms somebody to the same fate that he himself has to live with and they kill him for that even though he no-doubt won’t remember doing anything? What if…
He tries to stop his thoughts before they consume him but the fact is that somebody was killed for something they couldn’t control and the way things are going, he’ll be the next victim of that.
He knows Kurt wants to help him, but Kurt’s just one person…one tiny person, he thinks with a smile and nuzzles Kurt’s hair with his nose as Kurt lets out a quiet, pleased little sigh.
Kurt’s one person, and his mom and Burt know, but he almost…wants to tell somebody else. Somebody in the Club, somebody that can keep a look-out just in case, because the more people that know and that he trusts, the better at this point.
Still…
Kurt murmurs something and opens one eye, sleepy and half-awake as he kisses Finn’s shoulder on instinct and burrows down again, Finn feeling a stirring warmth in his chest that always seems to happen around Kurt and he doesn’t know what it means yet, but it feels pretty right.
Deciding that he’ll worry about it in the morning, he closes his eyes, strokes Kurt’s arm gently, and settles down to sleep.
