Torchwood: Miracle Day Part One Review

Finally watched it!!!

Um, okay. I'm underwhelmed. I don't know if this is popular or unpopular, but I really liked the Doctor-Who-esque style of the first two series, where each episode was self-contained and while some themes arched over the season they told a story and pretty much wrapped it up by the end of the episode.

It was fun, it was fast-paced, they had enough time to develop characters within their stories and everybody got a chance to shine.

CoE started to bother me because there were so many characters that you just...didn't care about and, to me, the pace of the show was very slow. That was five episodes.

This is ten. And I appreciate that they need set-up, but really, how many times did they need to tell us that nobody's dying? The audience isn't ignorant. We know what's going on; it's been in the promos. To me it felt a little like killing time and I really hope they don't spend half of each episode reminding us of this.

Anyway, yes. Hopefully the action picks up, but I don't...there's just too many people already and I have a feeling that, like in CoE, we really won't care about many of them.

On to the new characters:

Bill Pullman's character is freaking creepy, man. Seriously. Props to him (my dad was all, "He was the father in Casper!!" to which I replied, "I was FIVE, dad. I don't remember") The fact that he's becoming some new worship-icon according to the 'rest of the season' promo I'm not sure about because...where are the aliens?

That's another thing I miss: actual aliens. Everything's just this vague threat with human mouthpieces or human figureheads or whatever. WHERE ARE MY WEEVILS???

Um, the other two...I can see what people are saying about them being like Tosh and Owen although they don't go far enough and so far seem like poor copies. Yes, Rex is rather reckless and snarky and 'I-don't-care-if-it-doesn't-concern-me,' but he just...doesn't go far enough, if that makes sense, and neither does Esther.

If they're supposed to be their own characters, fine, but don't make them so similar to Tosh and Owen because they don't compare. :(

Um, onto the gang:

I LOVE ANDY, OKAY??? HE IS MARVELOUS AND LOVELY AND JUST PLEASE, MORE *SERGEANT* ANDY. PLEASE.

I can understand why Rhys wants to remove himself from Torchwood but he knew what he was getting into marrying Gwen and, quite frankly, I'm surprised she stayed put as long as she did. That girl's not going to be held down.

Gwen was...fine. I've never been the biggest Gwen-fan but she was fine. She had some good lines.

And Jack. JACK. Like I said before, Jack's mortality is FAR more interesting to me than why people can't die. Because he WANTS to, and you know he wants to, but I don't think he'll make that attempt in the middle of a mission.

Just...Jack. asf;ladfkasd;lfkja;lkdjf

The shout-outs: Besides the whole 'Torchwood dies young' thing the one that got me right where it hurts was Esther saying that she felt the accident was her fault and she can't get over the guilt and Jack saying that he knew the feeling. I was just like... *cries*. (However, as we ALL KNOW, Jack would NEVER have let Ianto go into Thames House with him knowing that alien was not only dangerous but LIVING IN A CAGE OF POISONOUS GAS. That was a HUUUGGEE writing error (also because Ianto wouldn't have rushed in without taking proper precautions)).

And Jack being 'FBI Agent Owen Harper.' I was torn between laughing hysterically and crying, and I ended up making this rather odd noise so I was glad I watched that alone.

And...as for the 'promo for the rest of the series'...with Jack making out with that guy in the dark room...I am HOPING (and I think I'm right...I think...) that Jack's just up to his old ways with random hook-ups and this isn't some true love come again thing.

We know who his true love was.

HE knows it. And I don't for one second believe Jack's over Ianto. Not with the look on his face during that one scene.

So, I think it's suffering from the same problems I got in CoE: too much drama and not enough action. It's not sexy and funny and fast-paced and *fun* anymore, and that's what I *loved* about Torchwood.

So I'll watch it. But I don't think it can ever compare to the first two series.

....Sorry if I sound like a Bitter Betty, I did enjoy it, it just...wasn't *Torchwood* to me. *shrug*

Um, I loved the Welsh countryside. AND THAT HELICOPTER SHOT OF THE BAY AT NIGHT, HELLO NOSTALGIA!!! My whole family was like, "THERE IT IS! THAT'S OUR TORCHWOOD!"

Also in the promo: Hello, Newman. That was kind of unexpected xP
