Make up Memories
Lee Sungmin was always cheerful and optimistic. Moving to a new working place was not a big deal for him. True, it was sad to leave his friends, but being his usual self, he always managed to overcome it. He was over with all the sad feelings and memories. But today was different. A single paper from his past took him back to his past memories and... Past love. The one he thought he had almost forgotten.
Several years ago Sungmin worked in LSM Company. He had had a good time back then. His best friend was Eeteuk, together with Eunhyuk and Donghae. Speaking of which, he remembered about his crush, Kangin. Ah yes, Kangin and Eeteuk were now together. Finally, after all those flirts and seducements. As far as Sungmin knew, they were still in a relationship even after Kangin left the city. For Eunhyuk and Donghae, they were still the same old dorky couple, even in the new company they worked in now.
Around a year ago, Sungmin left LSM Company. Eeteuk whined when he told him the news, but did nothing to stop him from leaving. It was all Sungmin’s decision to begin with. On his last night, he threw a farewell party with everyone, saying goodbye to them and secretly saying goodbye to all his memories. Sungmin then moved to another company with his high school friend. Shindong.
All went well for Sungmin until tonight. He was cleaning up his wardrobe when something yellowish dropped. He picked it up and read it. chokyuhyun@hotmail.kr was written on it. Sungmin went pale. All his memories came gushing on his head. Little did he know the paper was a sign that the wish he had buried long ago might come true. His wish to see that man one more time.
“Sungmin-ah, have you checked the list?” Shindong asked.
“Oh, about our shift? Not yet. Wait, I’m just going to check it.”
“I have new employees working in my team.”
“I have... Lee Young Jae... and...” Sungmin’s eyes went through the list and stared at one name in disbelief. He couldn’t believe what he saw. Could it be?
“And who?” Shindong asked impatiently.
“Cho Kyuhyun.”
Sungmin couldn’t stop staring at one particular man during the induction day. That man was the same as the one he could remember. Tall and slender, with his gentle smile and deep voice. Sungmin never expected Kyuhyun to remember him. It had passed long time ago. And besides, Kyuhyun didn’t reply his email. That was why he was shocked when Kyuhyun approached him after the briefing.
“Lee Sungmin. Is it?”
Sungmin was speechless. His heart was beating so fast until he was afraid it would explode in any minute. His cheek felt so hot. He tried to say yes, but instead he only gave the other man a nod.
“You remember me?” Kyuhyun chuckled. Are you kidding? Was what Sungmin thought. How many nights he had been through wide awake just because he couldn’t stop thinking about Kyuhyun? How many tears had he shed?
“Yes. From LSM Company, right?”
“Yeah, glad that you remember. Anyway, let’s do our best for this team.”
Another nod from Sungmin sent Kyuhyun away. Sungmin sighed. Boy, if this was a dream, never woke him up.
Unfortunately, everything didn’t go as he planned. It all started in that day. Sungmin swore he would give anything to go back to that day. He was walking home from a grocery shopping with Shindong. He was kind of absent minded that day. Someone passed by and Sungmin didn’t realize Shindong was hitting his ribs. It was dark but Sungmin still could see that the man passing by was smiling. Not recognizing the man, he frowned and just looked to another way, ignoring the man. After several steps away, reality hit him hard.
“That was Kyuhyun, isn’t it? Please say no.” He asked Shindong in horror, adding the last sentence quickly as soon as his friend opened his mouth. He has told Shindong about his story with Kyuhyun.
“That’s why I was hitting you.”
Sungmin cursed under his breath. He looked back but the said man was no longer in sight.
The following days Sungmin couldn’t bring himself to look at Kyuhyun. They often crossed each other’s way, but Sungmin always looked away. First was because he was feeling guilty for the other day. Second was because he felt shy now that he realized he had a crush on Kyuhyun. Shindong had given up pushing Sungmin closer to Kyuhyun. Eventually, even though Sungmin and Kyuhyun were in the same team for work, they rarely spoke to each other. They grew apart and became like complete strangers.
Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months. Now Kyuhyun didn’t want to look at Sungmin anymore. In fact, Sungmin was kind of broken hearted. He blamed himself for being unable to act sweet and honest. One night Shindong asked him to accompany him to a small party. Sungmin didn’t feel like it, but Shindong and several co-workers forced him. He ended up going with them.
“Maximum two hours, ok?” He warned them. They just laughed and nodded.
Sungmin sat alone, away from the crowd. His friends were having fun. Sungmin entertained himself by watching them and other people. From the corner of his eyes, he could see a man. He recognized him as the new employee who worked together in Shindong’s team. Wait, as far as he could remember, this man always hung around with... Yes. Great. There Kyuhyun was, standing behind his friend. Sungmin tried to hide himself instinctively. Kyuhyun walked pass him without looking at him. Shit, Sungmin cursed. His relationship with Kyuhyun just got worse. He let himself sank in the comfortable sofa beneath him.
A loud laughter woke him up. He knew it was Shindong’s. Tempted by curiosity, he tried to find his friend. Shindong was sitting beside Kyuhyun and his friend.
“There he was, talk to him.” Sungmin heard Shindong said to Kyuhyun.
“You’re gonna thank me for this.” Shindong whispered to him as he walked away, leaving the two of them.
“Hi.” Kyuhyun smiled. Sungmin nodded shyly. An awkward silence between them. Sungmin decided to break it.
“What are you talking with Shindong? Not that I’m nosy.”
“About how much you hate me.”
“What? It’s not like what you think. Really. I- I’m not.”
“It’s ok.” Kyuhyun chuckled gently. “Shindong told me the truth.”
“He did? Phew. Sorry for that. I just don’t know how to act.”
“Same goes to me. I thought you hate me, that’s why I decide to keep my distance from you.”
“How stupid.”
“Yes. How stupid.”
Another silence covered them, but it wasn’t the awkward one that occurred before. This time Kyuhyun was the one who broke it.
“Tell me, what happened after I left LSM Company.”
“Oh, Eunhyuk and Donghae also left. Then...” Sungmin continued his story. Kyuhyun was listening to him and replied sometimes. They exchanged laughs and smiles. Sungmin could die from happiness.
“Eeteuk-hyung and Kangin-hyung are now together.”
“Really? Wow, finally.”
“I know right? Told you I’m a good matchmaker.”
Kyuhyun smiled and remained quiet. Sungmin took a sip of the untouched glass on his hand.
“Then can I ask for your help?”
“Huh? For what?”
“Matchmaking.”
“Between who and who?”
“Me.”
“Oh.” The older man chuckled nervously. He could mentally hear something broke and he was sure it was his heart. “Sure. Tell me the name.”
“Lee Sungmin.”
“Fi- What?” Did his ears just deceive him? Did he just hear a wrong name? Oh wait. Maybe it’s another Lee Sungmin. Or maybe Kyuhyun was just joking. But no. Even though he was smiling, Kyuhyun had a serious look plastered on his face. Sungmin pointed a finger at himself, still couldn’t believe the situation. Kyuhyun nodded. After several seconds, Sungmin’s brain managed to comprehend everything. He gave Kyuhyun his best smile. The answer was obvious.
“With pleasure.”
