Chapter Thirteen: Family Reunion.
"Uruha. Did you hear me?" Aoi shifted on the bed slightly to touch Uruha on the shoulder. "I have to go to Yokohama next week for a case."
Uruha flinched. "Yeah. I heard you." He whispered. Uruha hadn't been feeling well ever since Midori had told him the news. Uruha didn't tell Aoi what Midori said yet.
"Are you feeling okay?" Aoi looked worried.
Tears burned at Uruha's eyes. Aoi was such a good actor. He sighed and felt the baby move around inside him.
Poor baby, Uruha thought. Growing up either without a father around or with Midori. Both choices weren't that great.
Uruha felt Aoi put the back of his hand on his forehead.
"You're feeling kinda warm."
Uruha closed his eyes.
Maybe it was all a bad dream....
~
Uruha's eyes fluttered open. He started shivering.
"Aoi.." Uruha's first instinct was to call out for him. He wasn't there.
Where was he...
Oh yes.
In Yokohama.
Back to sleep.
~
Uruha's teeth started to chatter so much that it made little clicky noises and he couldn't sleep. He was so cold.
"Heyyy babyy..Where are you?" Ruki opened the door to find Uruha curled up underneath the sheets as best as he could without hurting the baby. "OH.MYGOSH!! URUHA!?!?" Ruki leapt across the room in one bound to gingerly examine Uruha. "REITA! GET YOUR ASS IN HERE!" He yelled towards the door.
"Ru..ki..?" Uruha opened an eye.
"Shhh....It's okay sweetie...it's okay..." Ruki rubbed Uruha's back.
"Where are you?" Uruha could hear Reita's voice faintly from the hall.
"LIKE, WHERE ELSE?" Ruki yelled back.
Reita came inside and walked towards Uruha in a calm manner. "Hmm." He put the back of his hand onto Uruha's face. It felt like ice on his forehead.
"Uruha?" He said gently, like a doctor. "You're gonna be alright, okay? You just seem to be kind of feverish."
Uruha nodded slightly and closed his eyes. He heard Reita murmur something to Ruki.
Hmm.
Interesting.
~
"Uruha?" Uruha heard Kai. But it was faint, really faint. He opened his eyes reluctantly again.
"Hi." Kai said. "You feeling okay?"
Uruha shook his head then gave a gasp. The room was spinning.
"Oh dear." Kai helped Uruha sit up slightly so he could drink some water.
Uruha went back to sleep, hoping nobody would wake him up again. He felt Kai cover him with the blankets.
~
Uruha was unaware of what happened next, but he could feel a hand on his forehead again. Although Reita's hand was soft (he used a daily lotion), this hand was different. Familiar in a way.
"Uruha?" This voice was familiar too. It made Uruha homesick.
"Mom?" Uruha's eyes opened again. Yes. It was his mother, sitting on the edge of the bed. Ruki's mom was behind her, too, along with Ruki.
"Sweetheart, are you alright?" Uruha's mother tucked Uruha's hair behind his ear and stroked his face. Uruha also noticed that one of her hands were resting on the swollen belly. "Where's.." Uruha's mother swallowed and pursed her lips. "Where's Aoi?" She asked. Uruha's mother frowned slightly when his name was mentioned.
Uruha started to cry. The tears he held back were finally released and his mother gently lifted him up and cradled him (as best as she could) in her arms. Uruha's head pounded and it was hard to sit up.
"You're going to be okay. Mommy's here."
Ruki's mother swelled up in indignation. "Where IS that boy when you need him. He can't just LEAVE like this! You could be on your DEATHBED for all we know! I assume that he's the father of your unborn child." She asked dramatically in her strange way, referring to Aoi. Ruki nodded.
"Yeah, mom." He said.
Uruha's mother pressed her cheek against Uruha's forehead and stayed with him even after he fell asleep.
The next two days had been a blur for Uruha. He was sick, the doctor was called many times to make sure the baby was doing fine as well as he was. Of course, now Uruha was feeling better, but still fragile, like a single puff can blow him away. The two mothers had been taking care of Uruha and Ruki, as well as Reita, who avoided Ruki's mother on account of being afraid of her.
Now Uruha sat on a kitchen chair, drinking tea and watching Ruki stack toothpicks on top of another. It was like when they were children; their mothers were very close friends.
Ruki's mother came in. Like Ruki, she was short and had recently dyed her hair a dark mahogany. She was also plump, with a pleasant face and Ruki's eyes. Ruki looked like his father, however. Today she was wearing an old-fashioned two-piece skirt suit with round black buttons and a dark burgandy flower print. She swelled up with pride when she saw Ruki and Uruha.
"How are my two favourite boys?" She gushed when she came in. She grabbed Ruki's face and held it firmly between her big palms as she kissed both his cheeks many times. Uruha laughed. Ruki's face flushed bright red when she released his head.
"MOM!"
Ruki's mother only laughed heartily and ruffled Ruki's hair.
"How are you, Uruha dahling." She never asked questions like a question. She said them as if it were a statement.
"I'm doing okay." Uruha said.
A few seconds of silence passed by.
"Um, may I ask a question?" Uruha asked timidly.
"You already have, dahling, so you might as well."
"How did you and my mom know to come?"
"Well. Ruki dear called us. He said something about someone being pregnant and sick at the same time, so we left as soon as we heard." Uruha nodded.
"Of course," She continued. "I would have expected it to be RUKI to be the one that's pregnant! He was always the wild one." She ruffled Ruki's hair again. "Wilder than his brother, that's for sure." She poured herself a cup of tea.
"How's my dad?" Uruha asked.
"Oh, he's doing wonderfully. He recently won the lottery, in fact. Not that he needs it." Ruki's mother rubbed her fleshy hands together, and her many rings sparkled in the light.
"Oh, Uruha, I see you're awake." Uruha's mother walked in, carrying a plastic bag of groceries. She was still a bit young, having married early to her much older husband. She was around fourty-four now and she smiled lovingly at Uruha as she set down the groceries she brought in. Her hair was always in a bun, from what Uruha remembered, and she was tall and willowy, with a few laugh lines developing on the face that resembled Uruha so much.
"Have I shown you the pictures of Hideki yet?" Uruha's mother asked, referring to Uruha's nephew. "He's five now!" She produced some photographs from her wallet. They showed a little boy in a blue striped shirt with a tall woman that looked like Uruha's father.
"And Haru, too!" She continued excitedly, showing some more pictures of a younger boy sticking his tongue out.
"Wow!" Ruki said, examining the photos. "They both look like their dad ]though..."
"WHAT? Let me see that!" Ruki's mother took one of the photos and looked at it closely. "They look NOTHING like Kaoru!"
Uruha sighed, putting the pictures back onto the table. Aoi was still on his mind. He thought they were perfect, meant for each other. He even believed that Aoi really loved him, and Midori only proved him wrong. Tears filled his eyes once again, but Uruha was getting tired of crying. Why was he so weak? Then he looked up.
Ruki, Ruki's mom and his own mother were watching him.
"Are you feeling a bit under the weather?" Uruha's mother asked him gently.
"Oh, Aya. Can't you read your own son. Of COURSE he's isn't! Tell us what happened, dahling." Ruki's mother leaned back into her chair and took a sip of her tea.
Uruha bit his lip. Ruki's eyes widened.
"It's that Midori-bitch, isn't it?" Ruki asked.
Uruha bowed his head, afraid that he might start crying again.
"OOOOOOOHHH. That bitchy bitch's such a BITCH!" He stood up, ramming his fist into his other hand.
"Whose Midori?" Uruha's mother asked.
"Why is she a bitch?" Ruki's mother looked at Uruha to Ruki, then at Uruha again. "Answer!" She boomed when Uruha didn't say anything.
"WELL. Midori's Uruha's bitch of an obsteatrician and she is SO BITCHY, like, not like, Kyo-bitchy when he didn't take a nap, but like, BITCHY!"
There was silence, and Uruha's mother raised an eyebrow while Ruki's mother nodded.
"ANYWAYS. She is SO out to get Aoi, like, I'm not kidding, and she is so bitchy, did I mention that? Yeah. So yeah, she is out to get, like, Aoi in ANY WAY POSSIBLE, I'm thinking, and like, Midori has probably, like, done something EXTREMELY bad to Uruha." Ruki paused to take a breath and looked at Uruha. "Right, Uruha?"
Uruha nodded slightly, his head still bowed.
Uruha's mother looked at Ruki's mother. "Well, Aki?" She said.
Ruki's mother started to rub her palms together again. She started to chuckle menacingly, not unlike Ruki that time in the restaurant. Uruha's mother smiled.
"What?" asked Ruki?
Ruki's mother grinned deviously.
"We're going to make her pay."
