Chapter 12

Koki opened the car door for the Boss with a smile that can’t be erased off his face.

“You’re in good mood, aren’t you?” Shinohara noticed and commented before entering the car.

Koki just nodded, still smiling like an idiot.

“Ah… I know! It’s your birthday today. I heard from Yuichi this morning. Otanjoubi omedetou!” Shinohara gave him a pat on the shoulder. “Hmmm… why don’t you just stay behind for today? Take Yuichi with you and spend this day with your family.” He suggested.

“It’s okay, Boss. I told them that we’ll go to see them this weekend. Besides, I’ve set my mind on today’s activity already.” He entered the limousine after the Boss went in. He sat at the adjacent seat and grabbed the bottle of wine beside him. He gave the Boss a wine glass then took out one for himself and poured themselves a drink.

“For my second son’s birthday and for the Ivory Dragon sculpture that we shall be taking home tonight.” The boss smiled and raised his wineglass for a toast.

Koki blushed and scratched his head. He was half-embarrassed and half-proud of what the Boss had just called him but raised his wineglass just the same. “Cheers!” He nodded shyly and scratched his head again.

They arrived at the hotel and were greeted by Haru. “I’ve checked all items, Boss. It’s the real Ivory Dragon sculpture from Shanghai.” Haru handed a folder to the Boss and the latter skimmed the contents when they were in the elevator.

“Good. How about our item for bid?” Shinohara took off his eyeglasses and looked at Haru questioningly.

“Already on display too. I have been informed about the prospective buyers and one of them is the Iwanada boss.”

Koki panned his head at that instant. “Those faggots are here?”

Shinohara just shook his head. “I doubt they could even afford that painting. Those bastards are just putting up a front. I just talked to Takagi of the Sasaki clan 2 days ago, he said that the Iwanada’s smuggling business in Thailand had recently been busted and they lost a lot of money.”

DING. The elevator doors opened and Shinohara was the first to step out followed by Haru then Koki.

“Boss, I need to go to the toilet first. I’ll just follow later.” Koki excused himself when the Boss nodded.

“He’s here. I told you he’d come for the Ivory Dragon.” A man’s voice echoed from one of the cubicles and Koki knew he wasn’t the only person in the men’s comfort room. It seemed that the man was talking with someone on the phone. Koki just went on with his thing and faced the wall blankly.

“Ha? I thought it was Genta who was supposed to do that. That idiot! Maa~, we have met the hitman three days ago. He’s the best sniper in town. He already knows how the Nakamaru boss looks like. I don’t think there will be any problems. Everything is set, as soon as he comes up to get the Ivory Dragon, it’s bye-bye for the Nakamaru leader.”

Koki’s head immediately spun to the man’s direction. He quickly zipped up his pants and walked quickly to hide in the next cubicle.

“It was a good decision merging with the Fukuda clan and once the Nakamaru group looses their leader, we can finally take over the Tokyo districts.”

Koki heard the man snicker.

“Ja, the auction is about to start. I’ll go back to the hall now. I’ll call you back as soon as it’s done.”

Koki waited for the man to leave his cubicle and a few seconds later, his own cubicle door was kicked open. To his surprise, a man even taller than Haru dragged him out by his collar.

“Oi, kid. I knew someone was eavesdropping. No one messes with me.” And with that, he threw a hard punch at Koki’s face. Just the size of the large man’s fist knocked Koki out in an instant.

When Koki opened his eyes, he saw nothing but darkness. He scrambled up and tripped over a bunch of unknown objects as he searched blindly on the wall for the switch. When his hand finally landed on it, he turned the lights on. He looked around the crowded space and realized that he was in a storage room. The moment he recalled what just happened, he looked at his watch and dashed for the door. He turned the knob and realized that he was locked inside. He cursed and started pounding on the door. There was only a few more minutes left before the main item for auction starts and it was none other than the Ivory Dragon. Koki only had so little time to save the Boss from the assassination plot of the Iwanada and Fukuda clans.

Koki looked around to find anything he could use to break the door. Fortunately, a lever was leaning on the opposite wall. He grabbed the lever and latched it on the door’s opening, forcing the lock until it clicked. The side of the door broke as well. Koki threw the lever and ran out immediately to the other end of the hallway.

He rushed inside the hall panting, eyes searching for any sign of the Boss or the assassin. He was just in time, the Ivory Dragon was being taken out of the glass box and Haru and the Boss just stood up from their seats to walk up the stage and take the precious sculpture. While the crowds of men were all clapping, Koki’s eyes kept looking around until he saw some suspicious movements from the balcony. Then it hit him. Of course, snipers attack from above but it will take him longer if he climbed up to stop the sniper. So the only option left was to move the target away.

Koki ran to join Haru in escorting the Boss. As Shinohara ascended the stairs to get on the center of the stage, Koki discreetly informed Haru of the plot, his eyes still on the assassin who was now more visible from where he’s standing right now. The second he saw the man aiming the gun, he instinctively ran up just in the nick of time.

Yuichi was happily setting the table. He had prepared a special dinner since it was Koki’s birthday. He moved back to the stove top and took one last taste of the pumpkin soup before putting off the fire.

Yuichi paused for a moment when he suddenly remembered the incident this morning. He couldn’t explain to himself why he actually gave in to Koki’s request when it could mean that he’s giving the other false hopes. But he didn’t regret it at all. Just like the first kiss. He can’t deny that he liked it but can’t admit it as well. Just like his feelings, he knew they have grown after the fist kiss but he just can’t accept it yet. It might be a little selfish but Yuichi still can’t imagine himself being the serving boyfriend and all. He is still enjoying things in his own pace and own will.

In his mind, Yuichi thinks having a boyfriend is just like caging himself again. He had enough when his father dictated his life before and now that the leader finally loosened up on him, he had no plans on being tied again. So he decided to stand firm with his decision to just stay being friends with Koki but being more careful next time so that he won’t have to confuse Koki even more. Besides, however they put it, Yuichi can only be sure of one thing, Koki is special to him, and will always be.

He shook himself back to reality and continued with his chore. He took out the expensive plates he kept in his cupboard. It will be the first time he’ll be using the precious utensils… just for this occasion. He was about to place the plates on the table when they accidentally slipped from Yuichi’s grasp and fell on the kitchen floor into pieces.

Yuichi felt a sudden chill in his spine and went blank for a second before he knelt down to pick up the broken pieces of the porcelain plates. He sighed sadly, how could something so precious slipped off just like that? He had always been so careful with them and just a slight slip like that, they’re now broken and there was no way he can put them back. He was carefully picking the pieces up when he had a flash of Koki in his mind. He stopped midway and his heart began pounding painfully making him confused.

He began to worry as he moved around and finished cleaning. He still can’t think of a reason why he suddenly had that bad feeling about Koki. Then, just when he was about to get his phone to call Koki when there was a violent knock on his door. He rushed to get it and was greeted by Mori.

“Waka…”

Yuichi can’t help but feel all panicked. Mori looked disturbed as well.

Mori made a deep breath before breaking the news. “Your father almost got killed in the auction earlier this evening. But he is safe now.” Mori emphasized on the safe part.

Yuichi’s knees went weak for a moment, the fact that his father was in the brink of death still scared him. “Where is he now?”

Jikei University School of Medicine Hospital. But he said he can be discharged tonight.”

“Are you sure he’s safe?”

Mori nodded sadly, hating to carry on with the news he was tasked to bring. “Koki was the one who got shot. He saved Boss from the assassin. He’s in critical condition right now.” Mori looked down.

Yuichi couldn’t move, and found it difficult to breathe. He lifted his hand up and leaned on the wall. His mind clouded with unimaginable fear knowing that Koki’s life is in great danger. “Take me to him…” he barely managed to voice it out. His whole body was now shaking and he can’t control his tears.

“Waka…”

“Take me to him now!”

Realizing the panic in Yuichi’s voice, Mori nodded and escorted Yuichi to the car waiting outside the mansion.

Yuichi stood outside the operating room, praying that Koki would get through it safely. He had been crying since he got there. His father was advised to take full rest before he could get another heart attack. Haru was the one whom Yuichi found waiting outside the operating room. Yuichi couldn’t remember when was the last time he prayed so hard. He couldn’t even count how many times he called for Kami-sama already. But the mere thought of losing Koki seemed to be the scariest event ever.

When the doctor came out, Yuichi was beside him in an instant.

“Sensei…”

The doctor pulled his surgical mask down and removed his gloves slowly, raising Yuichi’s anxiety.
