PROLOGUE ~
Chapter 1 The black limo hailed to a stop in front of a large mansion. Koki quickly stepped out running to the opposite door to open it only to find Yuichi walking past him already.
Yuichi made his way to the gate and is greeted by another bunch of yakuzas lined up in two straight lines.
“Waka, okaeri!” they greeted in unison as if it was well rehearsed. Yuichi ignored them all, shoving his backpack over his shoulder and Koki followed his trail dejectedly. Meanwhile, Haru and Mori sped up to the large door of the mansion opening it for Yuichi. The Young Master heaved out a heavy sigh when he reached the doorstep.
“Waka, your father is waiting for you in his office.” Haru informed him before giving way.
Yuichi nodded and made his way into the mansion. Koki stayed on the doorstep looking around the place in awe. It was the first time he’s ever been in a house 5 times bigger than his own.
“Oi…” Mori whacked Koki on the head. “Stop, standing there and follow Waka!”
“Ah, hai… Gomen.” Koki scratched his head and quickly walked to catch up on Yuichi but occasionally looking around the large and definitely expensive ornaments of the large waiting room. He managed to get a glimpse of Yuichi’s back as the Young Master made a turn at a hallway at the far end of the room. Koki walked faster making his way past a grand wooden staircase that led to the next level of the mansion.
“I thought you’d be distracted.” A familiar husky voice surprised Koki as he walked in the hallway keeping good distance from the Young Master.
“Ha?” Koki asked as he slowed down, now walking beside Mori.
‘You kept looking elsewhere. You do know that you have to look after Waka don’t you?”
“I do know. It’s just amazing… this place… And that brat lives in here.” Koki grumbled then bit his lip as he realized what he just said.
Mori chuckled, slapping the back of Koki’s head. “If he hears you, you’ll be dead…” Mori laughed a little. “Actually, Waka doesn’t live here. He stays in the other house behind this mansion.”
“There’s another house here?” Koki covered his mouth with a hand. This family is filthy rich… he thought as they continued walking on what seemed to Koki as a never-ending hallway.
“Well… 5 years ago, on Waka’s 20th birthday, he insisted on moving out but Boss disapproved so instead of letting him leave the mansion, Boss had made a separate flat for Waka just at the back of the mansion. Boss wants to keep Waka in his sight as much as possible. 3 years later, on Waka’s 23rd birthday, Boss told him to take over the clan but Waka refused and since then, he kept on running away. We’ve been like cats and mouse ever since. We keep on chasing him.”
“That childish brat is already 25?!”
“Maaa~ he doesn’t act his age, ne? He is childish and self-centered and doesn’t care about the people around him. Not even his father.” Mori sighed before he mumbled again. “If only his mother were alive, maybe he could’ve grown up as a better man.”
The last statement made Koki stop. Mori only sighed again and Koki noticed that they were already in front of a large wooden door carved intricately. Mori knocked before entering inside, tagging Koki along with him.
Mori bowed and as soon as Koki realized that it was their Boss, Koki smiled before bowing politely himself. Yuichi on the other hand was standing right in front of his father looking at the ceiling with a grim face.
“Speaking of…” the Boss cleared his throat, “Tanaka,”
Koki looked up when he heard his name being called. He walked closer to the two. “Boss?”
“From now on, you will be Yuichi’s personal bodyguard.” The Boss announced. Sure enough Koki’s eyes widened and he gulped at the thought.
“Father! I don’t need a bodyguard!” Yuichi answered immediately with a raised voice.
“You do need someone to keep an eye on you 24/7. Prevention is better than cure, ne? Besides, it’s already too much of a bother for Haru and the others to be chasing you again and again.” The Boss responded calmly.
“If it’s that much of a bother then why don’t you just let me leave and do what I want???”
“Yuichi, even if you turn the world upside-down the fact still remains that you’re my son and you are the heir of this clan.” The Boss answered sternly, looking straight in Yuichi’s eyes.
“Then pass it to someone else! Let Haru take your place! He knows so much more than I do! How many times should I tell all of you that I am not interested to be the next leader?”
Koki stepped back, surprised and disheartened with how Yuichi was talking to his own father.
“You don’t understand me at all.” The Boss sighed massaging his temples.
“You don’t understand me as well, Father. I want a life of my own, if you cannot accept that then I’ll keep running away. I’ll find every way to escape. Away from this mansion and out of your life.” Yuichi heaved a breath before turning his back to leave.
Everyone went silent after that, even the Boss was lost for words. He sighed before turning back to Koki. “Time to do your job. Follow him and no matter what happens, don’t take your eyes off him.”
“Hai.” Koki answered quietly and bowed politely before leaving.
~**~
Koki followed Yuichi’s trail in a very timid motion. The Young Master made a few turns in a few hallways and soon they were outside the huge mansion. Koki looked around and realized it was some kind of a garden with a man-made lagoon. A small wooden bridge connected the mansion to the other side where another house stood. Koki assumed that it was the Young Master’s flat.
“Is this where you stay?” Koki decided to talk first as he stood beside Yuichi who was about to open the door.
“Do you really have to follow me everywhere I go?” Yuichi asked irritably turning around to face him.
“I guess so.” Koki scratched his cheek. “You heard what your father told me a while ago, right?”
Yuichi huffed loudly, pushing the door open. He made his way inside, throwing his bag on the big couch. Koki only stood by the doorway looking at the inside of the house. It was still so big, considering that it was only the Young Master living in there. Just the living room was even bigger than their laundry shop.
“Are you coming in or shall I lock you out?”
Koki immediately stepped inside upon hearing that. He closed the door behind him and stood uncomfortably at corner. He watched as Yuichi sat down on the couch and turned the television on. It was a good 10 minutes before Yuichi turned back to look at him.
“You can take a seat you know. You’re my bodyguard not a robot, you don’t have to rely on my commands every little thing you do.” Yuichi snickered, standing up and walking to the small kitchen taking out 2 bottles of soda.
Koki sat on a chair and tried his best to be comfortable. He was surprised with the feel of a cold can pressed against his cheek.
“Sorry for the commotion a while ago. You would have to make yourself get used to it though.” Yuichi took a seat in front of him.
Koki blinked, did the Young Master just apologize? A smile crept upon his lips and he nodded, “Maaa~ I usually argue with my father too… I guess you were just a little too serious.”
“I am serious. I don’t want it here.”
Koki frowned, he doesn’t want to argue with the Young Master. He has no right to intervene with family affairs after all. “Ne, just don’t make it too hard for me.” Koki said instead, trying to shift the topic.
“Huh?” Yuichi asked after taking a gulp of his drink.
“You said you’d find every way to escape… I don’t wanna get fired you know.”
Yuichi just shrugged and laughed a little.
“Ah… you should smile and laugh a little more often Aniki!!!” Koki pointed at Yuichi with a huge grin.
“What did you just call me?” Yuichi’s mouth dropped, one eyebrow raised.
“Aniki?!?” Koki repeated with uncertainty, he can’t even tell himself where that came from.
Yuichi kicked him lightly beneath the table to show his annoyance. “Who gave you the right to call me that?!”
“Ja… calling you Young Master is uhm… too time-consuming???” Koki tried his alibi, “Besides, I heard from Mori that you’re older than me… by 2 years… so uhm… I can call you that, right?”
“NO!!!”
“Why not?” Koki pouted.
“Coz it makes me feel older!!!” Yuichi banged his soda can on the table making Koki lean back.
“But you are…” Koki mumbled.
Yuichi stood on his feet, leaned across the table and grabbed Koki by the collar. “What did you just say?”
“Anou… I didn’t mean old as in an old man…” Koki took a hold of his Yuichi’s hand surprised at how soft the other man’s hand was. “I just meant that you are older than I am…”
Yuichi won’t let go of him though, still glaring looks like he’s going to cut Koki into pieces. Just then, Koki’s phone rang. He reached for his pocket and it was only then that Yuichi let him go. Koki flipped his phone open.
“Tanaka Koki, where the hell are you?” a familiar voice spoke from the other line.
“Pops, I’m sorry, I’m in the middle of work right now. I can’t come home tonight either, but don’t worry, I’ll ask my boss if I could drop by tomorrow. I need to pack some stuff too…”
“Wa-wa-wait!!! What work? And why aren’t you coming home?”
“It’s a complicated story Pops, I’ll explain next time. Ja!!!” Koki ended the call and turned his phone off. He looked back up to see Yuichi smiling at him evilly. “What?” he asked nervously.
“Oh nothing… Didn’t think that you’re a daddy’s boy.” Yuichi smirked as he turned to leave.
“Am not!!!” Koki stood as well, following Yuichi.
“Okay… As you say so…” Yuichi teased before stopping on his tracks. “Wait, what are you doing?” Yuichi crossed his arms.
“Following you, of course! That’s my job remember?”
“Even in the shower?!?!”
Koki felt his cheeks heat up and immediately backed-off. “Oh… that… Ja, I’ll just wait in the living room. And don’t try to escape, Aniki!!!” Koki trailed off, retreating to the living room.
“I said stop calling me that, BAKA!!!” Yuichi shouted back from his room.
