Summary: Ueda thought that his “little” crush on Ryo was one-sided. He tries to get over it, only to find out that Ryo has a little secret of his own.
Part One It was obvious to Ueda that Ryo and Jin were both frustrated with him. He had tried his best to memorize the lines, but he was still having a little bit, well a lot of trouble with them. He was used to memorization from the songs, but there was too much dialogue. After only a few weeks Ryo and Jin were perfectly ready to perform and they were doing great. Ueda bit his bottom lip as the director told them to take a break.
Walking over to edge of the stage, he grabbed his water bottle and took a large gulp. He picked up his script and opened it, looking at the lines they were going over. Frowning, he tried to concentrate on the words, muttering them under his breath until something hit him on the head. Wincing, he looked up to see an angry Ryo.
“Can’t you memorize those few simple lines?! I know you don’t have experience, but this is pathetic!” he said harshly, drawing quite a few stares from the crew and other JE members.
Ueda’s face heated up from embarrassment as he felt the others staring at him. “W-Well, I’m sorry…” he trailed off, trying to look anywhere but Ryo’s angry eyes.
Ryo ran a hand through his hair and rolled his eyes, “I don’t want your apologies. You need to focus. It’s not that difficult to memorize things. You need to work harder.” He continued, smacking Ueda on the back of his head again.
“But I’m really trying!” Ueda said, standing up, his hand playing with his ear nervously. “I am working hard. You don’t need to remind me.”
Kame looked over at the two and then glanced at Jin, who just shrugged his shoulders. Standing up from where he was sitting, he started to walk over, only to see Koki was already a step ahead of him. Kame raised an eyebrow as Koki walked straight up to the two and stepped up next Ueda.
“Back off, Nishikido. He’s obviously doing his best. So what if he’s not as good as you are. He hardly has the experience you do, so of course it’s going to take him a while longer. Think about it instead of just attacking him!” Koki said harshly, crossing his arms across his chest.
Ryo looked up at Koki, sneering. “Who the hell do you think you are?” he asked, only to shake his head and walk off.
Ueda glanced over at Koki, swallowing, “You don’t have to protect me. I can take care of myself.” He said softly even though it was obvious he was grateful.
Koki grinned a little and reached over to ruffle Ueda’s hair. “I know, man. He just pisses me off. Someday you should put your boxing to use and punch him in the face. You know you could kick his ass easy.”
Ueda smiled back, his cheeks flushed, “I would if it didn’t mean I’d get kicked out.”
Koki smirked at Ueda, “Don’t worry, you’ll get it down. If you need any help practicing lines, just call me. I may not have as much as experience as Mr. Perfect Actor over there, but I’m pretty good at memorization.”
Ueda nodded, looking happy once again. He picked up his script and began to study the lines, glancing up a little at Koki who gave him a thumbs up sign as he resumed learning his dance steps. Blinking a few times, Ueda wondered why Koki had helped him even though they weren’t really close. His tongue darted out to lick at his bottom lips as he turned back to concentrate on his script.
Frowning, Ryo watched the exchange silently from a chair offstage. Even though he was frustrated with Ueda not learning the lines, he couldn’t help but feel a little bad. His temper seemed to affect Ueda more than anyone else he knew. He was so used to other people accepting whenever he decided to vocalize his annoyance or anger and just brushing it off. Ueda on the other hand took everything very personal. Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair and then covered his face, taking in a deep breath. He would try his best to get through the day without blowing up at the older man again.
Standing up as they were called back to the stage, he walked over to Ueda, who quickly stiffened seeing his arrival.
Leaning over, he whispered, “If you need help with the lines, I’ll do it later.”
Ueda glanced up quickly, shocked as the words registered in his head. Frowning, he moved away slightly.
“No thanks. I’ve already got some.”
