Great Day

I had a great day today for the first time in quite awhile. It was filled with much walking, much art and a good deal of Einstein. I awoke much too early for a saturday, had a quick breakfast and headed downtown. The day started at The Field Museum where I toured the Einstein exhibit. It was very interesting, filled with lots of information I hadn't ever seen/read before. It was amazing to see some of the collections they had, some of his handwritten manuscripts for the initial Theory of Special Relativity and General Relativity. All in all a great exhibit, I highly recommend it. From there I bolted upstairs to see my favorite exhibit at the Field, the Lions of Tsavo. They never fail to amaze me. While wandering through the animal area of the museum I overheard a 6y/o kid commenting on some large mammal or other "They must have really big penises". I couldn't help but laugh as the father stuttered.

From the Field I went to The Art Institute of Chicago, my favorite museum. They have a Manet and the Sea exhibit going on currently. It's very interesting, featuring the works of Manet, Morisot, Monet, Renoir, Jongkind, Courbet and Whistler. The arrangement of the exhibit was excellent and sparked some good comparisons of the developing styles. It was just what I needed to recharge the batteries, and I didn't even mind the mindless parents and their stupid strollers (as if a two year old can appreciate Monet). From there I went to see the Regarding Seas and Skies exhibit, a collection of seascapes by three photographers. The first, Gustave LeGray was contemporary with Courbet and Manet, it was very interesting to see how his photography must've influenced the paintings. The other two artists, Hiroshi Sugimoto and DoDo Jin Ming are amazing. They did some incredible work and I really would love to own some of their prints. One of my favorite images is below.

Addition: I was talking to my friend Tij tonight from SoHo and was telling him about the different art I saw today and he matter of factly informs me that he knows Hiroshi Sugimoto. Damn him!
