I'm guessing: lack of PhD (not really fair, I admit, since conventional academic achievement is not necessarily a measure of nerdiness), and lack of entirely unuseful ability to memorise the periodic table?

Yes, this test is highly biased towards the early adopter / tech nerd, rather than the late adopter / hacker nerd.
