Miley responded to Sinead O' Connor's open letter by tweeting that "before there was Amanda Bynes", and then posting old tweets of Sinead's from a couple of years ago when she was mentally unstable and reached out asking for medication and treatment. And then she also posted the infamous picture of Sinead ripping up the Pope's picture from SNL.

I get that Miley is mad, and I have no issue with her defending herself, but this was not the way to go about it. Firstly, she dragged Amanda Bynes, who is currently INSTITUTIONALIZED, into this mess. Second, she posted those tweets of Sinead's in a way that made them look recent, which as Sinead rightly pointed, could be detrimental to her career and chances of finding employment, because many times employers will not want someone working for them if they are mentally unstable. And thirdly, I have no idea why she thought it was a good idea to attack Sinead on the issue of her mental health at all, especially given the fact that her close friends suffer from mental illness. I thought Sinead hit the nail on the head when she asked Miley to consider how Britney has felt over the years being so criticized and maligned publically for her mental health problems. And then you have her other friend Demi who has seemingly made it her mission these past two years to decrease the stigma of mental illness.

I just noticed that on Oct 4, the day after this mess all went down, demi tweeted: "samhsa.gov #NotAshamed". I don't think that was a coincidence. I think she purposefully put out the message that those suffering from mental illness should not feel ashamed, and be shamed by others, as a response to Miley's tweets. The website is a link to the segment of the government that awarded her earlier this year for her work to reduce the stigma of mental illness. Even though Miley is Demi's friend I feel like she really had no choice but to speak out on this. It would have been incredibly hypocritical and irresponsible if she hadn't. That gossip site insinuated that she was defending Miley's mocking of mental illness, and she couldn't just let that story stand. She needed to address it. She has a responsibility to the young people she claims she wants to be a role model to to address this.
