Temeraire. A song and a request for recs

Jun 22, 2011 23:44

I've fallen in love with a certain song, so I thought, why not to share it?

Um... do you think it was a good idea? There's that little problem, it's not an English song... Below the video, you'll find my lame try of translation. I didn't even try to keep the rhythm and rhymes, but the meaning is exact, as far as I could. It's written and sung in Polish, if you're curious of the original lyrics, that's here.

Quietly, without a shoot of hundred cannons,
On tow, stripped of her sails,
With dignity, as much as she could,
At twilight, she entered the history's pages.
A ship of the line which name was Temeraire,
Won't come back home.
At the end of her way, she fell into a sleep
In a silent dock, needless to anyone.

The time of ships of the line came to its end,
they sailed away to ports of oblivion.
Masts don't brush stars by night,
Cannons rumble only in memories.
No 'God save the Queen!' heard from decks, no 'Vive la France!'
There's no more ships of the line on The English Channel.

Today, no one remembers flags' colours,
Nor Captains' names.
The time obliterated names of ships,
Threw wrecks on the ocean's bottom.
And the ship of the line which name was Temeraire,
Didn't go away into the sea depths.
At twilight, she set sails in the last voyage,
Where any shot won't reach her anymore.

How do you like it? The band's name is Ryczące Dwudziestki (Roaring Twenties), here's their website (with English and French version).

And by the way, do you know any good English shanties in good performances? Some really good bands? To my surprise, I didn't find much of them. And any which I'd love... I must admit I didn't search for a long time, though. And that I'm damnably picky also doesn't help... Any recs for a picky landlubber? Especially a capella ones? :)

Partially reposted from my own journal.
