Thursday was poker night, Friday softball. The Omnivores played better than ever, losing by just one point (7-6!). We had the early game, and afterward I stayed to drink beer and watch the other league games with two of my teammates; this softball business is such fun.
After the game, I got a call from my boss at my sometime part-time job, asking if I'd by any chance be able to help her out the next morning. I had no plans so I said sure, why not, even though it meant I'd have to be ready to go at 8:30 on a Saturday morning (which is my Sunday morning). I was to hand out little sample cups of soup at this fundraiser event for the Red Cross, called "Heart of the Home Tour." People with really nice houses put their homes on this tour, and for $25 people buy tickets and visit all the nice houses, and volunteer docents show them around. They also get various businesses from around town to donate food and drink-- I was stationed in the backyard of this gorgeously landscsaped country home in Winters, shaded beneath an umbrella and standing in front of the most pleasantly musical fountain. Across from me, Red Cross volunteers were offering tastes of two local wines-- and when they offered, I didn't decline-- I thought they were delicious. Yes, it was well before noon. But hey, I wasn't driving. What I was really there to do was promote
the restaurant, and I find it so much easier to be chatty with a plastic cup of tasty Sauvignon Blanc in my hand. I didn't have to work very hard, anyway-- people who tried the tomato bisque overwhelmingly agreed it was phenomenal, I just had to talk up the fact that all of Tony's food is that good (it is), and that dinner there is so worth it. They do local, seasonal cuisine-- the menu changes weekly, and it's always amazing.
After I got a ride back to Davis, it was ping pong, pink wine and Clerks 2, which I unfortunately dozed through most of.
At some point over the weekend I invited people to my house for Cinco de Mayo dinner, but I never quite got around to changing my schedule at work, though I did go in slightly early Monday morning-- then when I got home I began furiously cooking, as I wasn't sure how many people would be coming over. I made a huge pot of beans and one of Spanish rice, and two pans of enchiladas. Oh, and mango sorbet for dessert. Turns out no one came over except my friend Andy, who stopped by when he got off work (and also took a plate home to his girlfriend, who also appreciated the Cinco de Mayo dinner). So I have enchilada dinner leftovers for days to come. And mango sorbet!
This morning I got an e-mail letting me know that my REM ticket is in the mail and on its way to me now. The concert is just 3 and a half weeks away! I am so excited.
