He nods. "Of course, with your studies. Here--"
He takes out papers, including a copy of his employment
history, photocopy of his Social Security card, and
driver's license. "As you can see, I've been steadily
employed for the last several years. No firings, or so on.
Oz told me that you're hoping for someone with a knowledge of magic--"lowering his voice out of habit--"the practical aspects, as well as theoretical. I can offer that, too--ask me almost anything." He smiles
warmly.

Anya looks over the papers he's handed him, nodding in approval.

"Well, it is a magic store, so yes. That would be helpful." She tilts her head, thinking. "Okay. This is a regular occurrence. Someone comes in and asks about what she'll, because it's almost alwaysa she, needs for a love spell. What do you do?"

"To make someone fall in love, or at least infatuation--?"
He represses a smile. "I take it that saying 'try a back rub and some lingerie' is out of the question. Hm. I certainly wouldn't give her the components, or a list of them," turning
serious, "I've seen someone under the influence of a spell like that. I'd probably first attempt to convince her to try something less drastic--there are spells to find or attract someone that don't turn your 'love interest' into stalker guy. Anything that didI wouldn't sell her, I do know that."

Anya nods, "Which is good. Because a man being turned into stalker guy is bad for business. There could be lawsuits, though I doubt the court would take her seriously. There would, at least, be the loss of a potentially happy customer. Part of the job is helping the amatuers figure out what it is they truly need. Maybe just something to attract love into her life or help her lover herself more. If she's adamant...sell her something harmless. When it doesn't work...well, it could have a placebo effect, or she'll just doubt her own abilities. Someone who knows what they're doing won't ask." She ignores the obvious part about it being wrong.

"There are books upstairs. There's a list of people that can go up there. If someone asks to and they aren't on the list and I'm not here," she bites her lip, worried. Test them. Thoroughly. Make them show you something they can do. A light cantrip. Levitate a pencil. Something basic at least."

"Understood. Are the materials upstairs for sale, or only research?" Wanting clarification on whether or not she wants the books in question to leave the store.
"I could probably tell--if someone has magic, that is, but that doesn't necessary answer whether or not they know what they're doing."

"They're for sale. Some of them are rare editions and very, very expensive though, so we let people research with them if they want. Take notes or whatever. For a small fee, of course. Except for a small group of people who can research for free. There's a list."

She looks at him, curious. "How could you tell? Do you read energies?"

"You're going to laugh.
I do, but it's not reading, it's hearing. Sometimes scent, too.
Like, oh, Oz--when I met him--I heard his normal
voice, when he spoke, but also, heard that wolf of
his growling. It works for objects, too, though not
as well. Magic-users--Well, they all sound different,
depending."

She doesn't laugh, though she smiles at him. "They sound different?"

"I know. Weird. But yes. Stronger mages or witches are a bit louder, or more, varied, I guess, is the word.
Ordinary people, I don't hear anything; with even weak
'casters I hear an echo. Could sound like anything from
thunder--for someone who's a weatherworker-- to something that sounds like guitar music or a kettle hissing. You do too--"faint blush. "But that's none of my business, I do realize."

"Huh. I can't tell. Like, not auras or anything. I can sense it when they're casting, of course, but not just...talking." She smiles at the blush. "Yes. I recently started with it after a long...hiatus. I did a lot of spells and such as a girl, then..." A little shrug, skipping 1120 years or so of demonic power instead of magic. "I had a reason to stop. That reasons is gone."

Kane smiles. "This isn't really something I learned, aside from learning how to interpret it. For a long time I didn't know--I used to think I was imagining things, at first." He tries to get the conversation back to mundane details. "I also know how to run a cash register and do basic accounting. That's a lot easier to demonstrate. Ah--I should mention that I can't be here weekends or evenings."

"Oz mentioned that. You have a daughter, right?"

She reaches behind the counter. "I haven't done the accounting for yesterday. Want to do it for me?" An easy enough demonstration.
