A Death Sentence for Apathy
(A weekly [or so] editorial on things related to me)

September 18, 2005:

We all have preferences, and that's ok. Like black people and barbeque sauce, asian people and rice...wait that's bad. I don't need to make crystal clear analogies to get my point across. We can go into the philosophical/psychological debate on why someone likes blue, but we'll save that for another day.

Right now, what can we say about preference versus orientation. For starters, orientation is something unlike that of preference. When we prefer something over something else, it's usually saying "I LIKE A, but PREFER B." However orientation says: "I TEND TO LIKE A more than B." Some people are goal orientated, they tend to get task accomplished by setting a specific goal just for them. "Do the trash. Finish the laundry. Etc" Some people are visually orientated. They tend to figure things out by seeing. However they came to be that is another story. The main point is what is orientation versus justifying ones preference.

I don't know why, but I believe that people have orientation set into them. It's not something that can be merely changed by choice. I mean sure everyone can change their actions, but everyone has an initial reaction and thought. That initial reaction or thought is something that I believe is orientation. Some people say we are all born with a clean slate at birth, and that through experience and time, through social interactions, cognitive learning, and the ability to think critically, we've all formed our own ideas about issues. However deep down there is something more fundamental about why we do the things we do that won't be discussed here for lengths sake.

Orientation I believe is something on a level that's deeper, personal, and intricate. Preference is something everyone can share. Orientation is definitely something that trait that everyone has also, but it's different. We can all prefer to like something, but that doesn't mean we necessarily like doing it continuously. Orientation is the true test of time. Time separates the difference between orientation and preference. Sure one day we can like orange chicken
