Imagine, you marry [NAME UNKNOWN] and have one child. This child will have ninety-seven great-great-great-great-grandchildren. There is a global epidemic, and 99% of humanity is wiped out. (At least) one of those great-great-great-great-grandchildren will remain, and s/he will be responsible for repopulating the world.
Then, assume (god forbid) that you contract some lethal disease that kills you before you meet [NAME UNKNOWN] and have a child. The entire first scenario doesn't happen, and humanity dies out.
I just realized: this doesn't have anything to do with evolution.
