I was discussing once with my brother, about our existence and who we are.
True that we might just be a mass of cells and all the motions and movements in our body are merely the result of impulses and chemical reactions.
Everything that we do is due to some complex reaction in our brain and a series of other reactions within our body.
But, everyone ( Read more... )

This is brilliant, for real. I'm not going to even attempt to respond to that because I know basically nothing about string theory, but it's pretty fascinating stuff.

Personally, I think that conciousness is the result of brain chemistry, more or less. I think that we are basically just cells and chemical reactions, and that our mood and our decisions and stuff like that are determined by factors in the brain, like serotonin level. So in that sense, I think that everything that makes us feel - happiness and love and music and all that - can be scientifically explained. Which would make life seem kind of pointless, in a just-another-link-in-the-foodchain type of way. But, even if you know that all that's happening is your brain is sending some happy or sad or angry or whatever signals to you, you still feel it, even if you know exactly why you're feeling it. Which is why, when I hear a song I love, I can know that it's just the chord changes and things like that which are making me feel a certain way. Or when I'm with someone I like, and I feel happy around them, I know it's basically because of the hormones going on and everything. But it's still enjoyable. So if you let go of the whole idea that how you feel is determined by science, and just let yourself feel that way, life doesn't seem as mechanical. That's how I get around the whole "we're just the product of evolution" thing, anyway - even if that is all we are, and how we feel is no more complex than how other animals feel, we may as well just feel it and stop analyzing it.

Have you seen The Matrix? It's like that quote, from Cypher, I believe, when he says something about how he knows the steak in The Matrix is fake, and that it's been designed to seem delicious, but he doesn't care, because he enjoys it anyway, and that ignorance is bliss. That's what I think life is like.

Oh man, I'm such a nerd. The next time you post something like that, you're going to be like "Everyone has opinions, gimmie yours, except for Monika, because she's kind of crazy." Haha. Us daughters of professors, I swear. We're too philosophical.
