Given the fact that I can only savour little bits of food nowadays. I tend to enjoy them more and more.
To get to the point. Fast food and the classic European view of it. I know I'm a weird kind of guy, so I always liked fast food, but considiring it as thus. A quick meal if it's necesarry. When I was in university, most of my meals consisted of these kinds of foods. But they can't compete (to my palate) with a well cooked meal. Even if you can get fast food consisting of mussels, kidneys (yummy home made) or stews. Large firms as Mac Donnalds just started out overhere, so most fast food shops where reasonably small and made still a lot of food themselves. Which didn't make things easier! If you wanted the right Chinese, Italian or Belgian meal, you could have to walk rather far. Drinks consisted mainly of local Pilsner or another local beer. Lemonade, coke and all the sweet drinks were too expensive, or too sweet! Prices were affordable, a quarter for a beer a bit more for a helping of French fries with Mayonaise, Belgian Pickles or Tartare and a portion of stew. It got you through the night. This was McD's worst nightmare, they couldn't really compete with these prices and choices. But with enough monney and advertising ...
Snails: no, those I keep for the British. Nice to eat, but hard to cook. If you don't do it the right way, you end up eating rubber tyres. A bit the same as preparing Calamares.
Other strange meats also need their own ways of preparing before cooking, but I still say it's ever so rewarding.
