When I first started breast feeding, about 2.5 years ago, nursing covers were not widely available, and they were ugly. In the beginning if I wanted to hide my nursing activity I would put a receiving blanket over my breast and baby. Very quickly I found that this made it hard to see what the baby was doing to get a proper latch and I worried about the baby's breathing. So I ditched the blanket and simply breastfed where I felt comfortable and maybe used a small blanket to cover my breast only.
This time around I just discreetly nurse whenever and wherever and don't bother to cover myself more than my clothing already covers me.
And now that I see nursing covers everywhere I am offended by them. I believe women should be free to nurse whenever and wherever they need to and should not be compelled to cover themselves or their babies. Nursing covers, while these days lovely and made with trendy fabrics, seem a step backward to me. If an individual woman would not otherwise nurse in public without one, then I think it would be warranted. But I do not advocate general use by nursing women.
The following is of course an extreme exaggeration, but, on the scale of women's freedom of choice and equal rights, nursing covers lean toward burkha.
