Today I learned that the Japanese celebrate New Year's in the following ways:
They have three days of celebration, instead of the one that we have. Four, if you include New Year's Eve.
On New Year's Eve, they clean out the house, eat soba (buckwheat) noodles for health, and then listen to a gong ringing 108 times (to purge the 108 sins they believe each person commits a year). It is a solemn occasion.
On New Year's day, they exchange up to hundreds of cards with friends, family, and business associates. This is especially required for kids, who must write to their parents.
They also drink some sort of wine (for health reasons, I'm sure) on New Year's day.
I guess the other two days are spent partying.
Some beliefs about New Year's Eve dreams:
There are three good luck images that will bring you good luck if they enter your dreams. They are, in order of luckiness,
1. Mt. Fuji (who's gonna dream of that?)
2. Some kind of japanese hawk
3. An eggplant
No joke.
And from some hints in the manga I've read, I think dreaming about a friend or crush means that a good relationship will form between you and them.. In the case it's a friend, you'll have a better relationship.
Or that could just be a fortune cookie.
feel free to correct any mistakes or misinterpretations, and happy dreams, yall.
