Your top 9, America! Oh LOL -- start with a cut to an audience shot of Lisa Rinna, Harry Hamlin and kids. Tonight's theme is any song they want, as long as it's a popular song on iTunes. And Allison's Tina Turner hair behind Ryan during the opening is FREAKING ME OUT.
Let's start with Anoop singing a song by Usher. hmmmm .... He already missed the first note/word. He had about 4 words out of his mouth before he hit it. His jacket is reminiscent of Michael Jackson, and his face is kinda Elvis-sneery, like he's trying to be a "bad boy". Face it, Anoop, you're a nice guy. Stop with the sneer -- it's deforming your very handsome face, and it's closing off your vowels too! He sounds decent, and I certainly don't recognize this as an Usher song, but his mouth turned down at both corners like he smells something bad is bugging me and it's a little yell-y. Not awful, but I'm not taking it home to Mama either.
Megan Joy is going to sing "Turn Your Lights Down Low" from Bob Marley/Lauryn Hill. Is she wearing mom pants?! I guess not, but whatever is going on in her midsection is distracting me from ... everything. Why isn't she in one of those shortie sundresses and barefoot?! This girl is SO confused about who she is as an artist. This is a weird song choice. She sounds more like Megan, but I'm not sure Megan should be singing this song. So weird. And how can such a cute girl look so ... awful? Why isn't she singing Adele songs? Or even Bjork? Amy Winehouse? This was bad, and felt like it was never going to end. And the judges totally agree with me.
Danny is back in his glasses to sing a Rascal Flatts song. Nope, sorry Danny -- NOT everyone likes them. He missed one of the first intervals, but this is a VERY good song choice for him. I like the way it has some country undertones, but is really more rock ballad-y than hick. That makes it more palatable for me, and I'd guess a lot of others, too. He needs a better-fitting jacket, though. EEUW! WHAT was that last note? That was a great performance -- really -- he did very well -- marred by a horrible final note. I hate stuff that doesn't resolve, and that was just bad. Otherwise, lovely. And felt half as long as the Megan song. Um ... someone needs to tell Randy that you can't "keep your swagger moving".
Crazy-haired Allison is up to play her guitar and sing "Don't Speak" (No Doubt). Her hair is like a Bratz doll or something crazy. I like this arrangement, though. Oh! I know! She's a red-headed Cyndi Lauper from 25 years ago! The dress, the leggings, the feathers for hair, the WHITE heels, eesh! But this is the closest I've come to liking her sing so far. I still say she'll be the last female standing, even though I don't prefer her style at all. Good job, Allison. She's Kelly Osborne and Cyndi Lauper's love child. oh LOL -- Randy actually asked her what she's wearing!
Our piano man Scott is up to sing "Just the Way You Are" (Billy Joel). It's just him and the keyboard ... and slicked back hair above his ears in a bi-level my 17-year old self would be proud of. He's very Josh Groban-esque, and thus, not right for this competition. It's lovely in a piano-bar-y way, but not that great for this. That was really pretty. Really.
Matt is doing a song by The Fray, which I think will be a great song choice for him. He's also accompanying himself. I hate when singer-piano players over-exaggerate their shoulders to move when they're stuck behind the keyboard. So ... this IS a good song choice for him, but ... his voice is wobbling quite a bit and he sounds too much like The Fray, so it's not "him". oh DEAR! What was that combination of notes for that high "meeeee"?! Blech.
Wow -- Lil chose a Celine song. Let's hope she isn't as flat as she was in the opening clip. The problem with legato songs is that it's easier to hear notes you're not confident of. So in the opening verse, we hear every flat note and nervous flutter. When she breaks into the chorus, she's better ... and certainly stronger, and LOL her Cheryl Burke (from DwtS) wig is a little distracting. She did NOT hit that key change. This was a yawner of a song. WHY won't she do a Whitney/Mariah power ballad? Why would she do a Celine boring ballad? Even Celine has power ballads. That was all kinds of boring. It was really heavy.
Last week was the first time I really liked Adam. Let's see if I still like him this week, as he sings "Play That Funky Music". Evidently, he liked the Elvis hair from last week, because it's back. Now with extra bouf! I don't like the pauses between "they were dancing/and singing/and..." And the chorus is too fast. He can barely keep up with the band. I like the break down part, but his 80s rock screams are out of control. That was weird. It was about 30 musical styles in one, and felt schizo and he was screaming at us. An admirable performance, but ... I'm worn out listening, and it kind of hurt me. I could still use less of his eyebrows, too. And I didn't even mention his crazy wacked-out dancing!
Last up is Kris, singing "Ain't No Sunshine" and accompanying himself on the piano. He looks like he needs some sleep in the opening package. Lil could take a note from him on How to Handle Nerves in Opening Slow Notes. Nice! This is a little gritty and I love the strings with it. I think this is the first song of the night I can imagine hearing on the radio tomorrow. Wow -- this is good! Seriously, this is the song of the night. I'm not playing. Nice, nice, nice. Restrained enough and a nice arrangement, and sounds like him and not trying to ape the original recording artist.... good. Although another semi-sour last note. What's up with tonight?
