*ring, ring*
Recording: Thank you for calling the
Tattered Cover Bookstore, .... press 1 for directions, 2 to find a book, etc., etc.
Me: select the option that might have information about book signings
Recording: On Monday, at the mmphfletmph location, some author will be signing their book. On Tuesday, at the Historic LoDo location, an author will be giving a slide show. Also on Tuesday, *coughhackcough* at the Highlands Ranch location, an author will be doing something bookish. On Wednesday, ....
Me: can't listen to this guy anymore and press "0" for Operator
Operator: Hello, Tattered Cover, how may I help you?
Me: I'm calling about the
Jen Lancaster signing on Wednesday in the Highlands Ranch location. I have a couple questions -- can you help me?
Operator: Sure, I can try.
Me: I've never been to a book signing before, and I'm wondering if I can bring a copy of her book that I already own for her to sign, or do I need to buy a copy there?
Operator: Well, let's see... She's doing a reading, and will be signing books, and no slide show or anything, but it's at 7:30, and it doesn't require tickets or reservations, so you can just come down then! OK?
Me: um ... you didn't answer my question.
Operator: Oh, she'll be signing books
Me: Yes, that's what I thought might happen at a book signing Out loud: Yes, and can I bring a copy I already own, or must I buy one there?
Operator: OH! Well, it doesn't say there are any restrictions, so I think you could bring the copy you have. Sometimes authors or publishers insist that you buy a copy there, but it says "no restrictions". So I guess there are no restrictions.
Me: Ok, thank you!
I didn't bother asking if it would be a problem to bring the copy I own -- you know, how would I prove I already had it -- and buy another copy for a friend. That seemed rather confusing and complicated. Maybe I'll bring my copy in for a signature and then put it in the car and go back in for a new copy ... On the other hand, maybe I could make some extra money recording their author list for them. The message said it's updated once a week. And the guy who did it was AWFUL. Awful.
