Because I really am that smart (or perhaps because of a total lack of common sense whatsoever), I joined the readthenewberys community. Actually, now that I think back, they only convinced me to read the first book because the author was Dutch!

Regarding the supernarcoleptic powers of your book. I think I am reading the sequel: I swear this book has mogadon laced pages. 'The Sacred Hunger' by Barry Unsworth, while being immensely intersting (I think) is so thickly written that the prose is almost syrup and it hurts my special tiny brain bits.

Ant, you made me laugh with this review AND want to read the book - now that's talent!

I think you will have a great time with this project. Newbery Award books loomed large in my childhood reading. Some of the ones I love best were winners from the 40's and 50's - Strawberry Girl and Rabbit Hill come instantly to mind. In my mind's eye, I can even still see the gold medal on the book as I took it off the library shelf in gleeful anticipation of the world within. Then there was Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, ...and now Miguel, and a much re-read 1st Edition of Doctor Doolittle (complete with hand colored bookplates in the center and a handsewn binding) that I still have. Several more come to mind like Ginger Pye and Holes and Walk Two Moons but I think I'll stop now - after all this is YOUR journal isn't it? LOL
