spices and more spices

I'd also like to know if anyone reading this has ever known anyone who got a car for Christmas? I ask because for the last month, anytime I have turned on a television, all I have seen were CAR ADS! Seriously, do normal people really get entire vehicles as presents? It got so outrageous that Unk and I started saying to each other, "it's not too late to get me that car, you know..." That was going to be my year-end rant, but frankly I don't have the energy to care any more than this paragraph.

This morning I rearranged my spice cabinet, which was a joy and made me want to cook exotic things but was also the ultimate in procrastination as I'm putting off de-Christmasing. What kind of weirdo organizes one thing to put off organizing something else?

And while we're talking about spices, I have yet to be happy with the way my spices are arranged. They're currently in alphabetical order, which is clearly the best yet, but they're not Just Right. I think I've written before about how I always assumed there were basically two ways to organize spices: either in alpha order, or divided by savory/sweet. Humorously, when my friend Tall Sarah helped us move into this house and asked me how I'd like them organized and I gave her free reign; she found a third way: by manufacturing company! Thus, I had McCormick spices on the lazy susan and Schilling spices on the stackable shelves! It was quite comical. Now that I'm buying my spices at the fabulous Savory Spice Shop which is conveniently located down the street from my favorite tea shop, I'm waffling on buying bags or jars. And of course, now I have both. So now the spices are alphabetized starting on the top shelf of the lazy susan (allspice - coriander), continued to the bottom of the LS (cream of tartar which is not really a spice - nutmeg), carried over to the stackable shelves (onion - turmeric), and then the alphabet starts all over again in a box for the bagged stuff (top right in the pic). It's really quite exhausting, you see. Mundane to the extreme, and yet important enough for me to blog about.

Gee whiz, I'm riveting.
