good question.
Sometimes I know what's right on lay/lie and sit/set and sometimes I don't. Sometimes I know what sounds right, but not why.
I *think* I'd lie on the bed, but lay down. But my FIL is from a Nebraska farm, and is all the time screwing up sit/set, so it's possible the incorrect one is rubbing off.

Whereas I laid down the bottles of port, if I did it yesterday.
Hehe - that's why it's confusing, I think. Because it's the past tense in one meaning, and the present in the other.
