[OOC] Canon Update

Jun 08, 2010 18:38

I got and read the eighth and final volume of Venus Versus Virus a little while ago, and I've canon-updated Sumire from the end of the fourth volume to the end of the series. Her personality is pretty much the same, although she's stronger and more confident in herself now. She also has better control over her powers.

At the end of the series, Lucia and Sumire realize they are the "Gate" and "Key" to the True World (the concept of which has shades of Gnosticism), respectively, and the role of the Key is to use their Berserker power to "break open" the Gate. Lucia and Sumire reject the True World, and in doing so Lucia stops having visions of the darkness of the True World and thus no longer needs her eyepatch. However, the fact her left eye is still gold implies she still carries within her the Fragments that made her the Gate in the first place, so she probably still has her powers. The same is likely true of Sumire, but because she rejected the True World, there's a very low chance of her losing control of her powers anymore, as her Berserker side no longer has a "Gate" which to break open.

Speaking of Sumire's powers, in volume six she received a new bracelet. This one is studier and can combine two elements at once, like mixing water and wind to make lightning, or fire and earth to make lava. Her old bracelet had broken in volume five when she attempted to combine two elements with it.

On a smaller note, the final showdown was on Sumire's birthday, September 6, which according to Nahashi's calendar, fell on a Saturday, which means the series took place mostly during 2008, and then the six-month timeskip in the final chapter puts the ending of the series as taking place in 2009. Initially, I thought Sumire was from 2005 since that's when the manga began serialization and I had her say so in one thread, but that's getting retconned. So from now on, if the subject comes up, she'll say she's from 2009. Also, she now has been outside Japan to visit Lucia's home country (canon never says what it is, but I'm guessing either England or France), so again, if the subject comes up, she'll say that she'd been outside Japan, but won't specify beyond "Europe."
