defriended by a Christian for defending stem cell research

Mar 10, 2009 10:26

I've known this girl since middle school, and she only became a super wacky Christian after she graduated from high school and got married and moved to the south (go figure). This is a stupid Facebook argument I had with her, it's pretty amusing but also kind of depressing. It's pretty short but if you don't feel like reading the whole thing at ( Read more... )

I have an equally dopey ex-friend who is Catholic. This coulda been written by her. I hate the whole "If you're not pro-life, you're anti-life, which means YOU LOVE DEATH AND ARE SATAN." She has unfriended me on LJ but not Facebook.

I dearly hope she never procreates, despite her preparations to be a baby-cannon: dropping out of college, getting married to the only available Catholic man vaguely her age, and not even having a job. I want to see her forced to be useful in life rather than just shooting out 12 mindless sheople kids. [/tangent]

Oh man. This girl is a self-proclaimed baby making machine. She literally called herself that like 2 days ago.

How can people like them really be satisfied? I don't get it.

That's the true miracle of religion: lowering people's expectations and making them think they'll receive some magical, unverifiable reward after they're dead.

Agreed. I think that's why this girl has embraced her new religion so adamantly; in fundamental Christianity you aren't only accepted if you don't like to think, you're celebrated!

I really hope so. I was kind of picturing her telling her husband about this, and him saying something like, "Well maybe we should do more research about stem cells honey." But no, that won't happen. I'm sure it'll be more like, "Dear you were so right in defriending her! You don't need to be talking to godless atheists sweetheart! Oh by the way make me a sandwich."

I think when someone assumes there is only one right answer and they're sure that they have it, when a logical view from the opposite side confronts them, they understand the opposite side. But instead of thinking 'is everything I believe subject to this?' they instead say 'this person is wrong. My intuition was wrong. I need to trust god more.'

"WWJD?"

Priceless. You turned her own bullshit against her.

She doesn't understand herself.
I think "you care more about cells in test tubes than real living breathing people in the world" was a bit harsh though, a bit uncalled for when she was clearly confused.

Yeah, I probably should have been nicer about it. By that point though I knew the conversation wasn't going to go anywhere. I had to hold myself back from calling her a brainless robot as it was.

For people who don't like thinking religion makes a lot of sense. :\
