iceblink reports:

Mark's account insomnia has just been suspended without notice as a result of his efforts to determine who was behind some of the phony "sock puppet" accounts that have been used to post content to their sponsored communities. Some of the information he ( Read more... )

"He shared the results of his research in a community opposed to advertising, and was suspended soon afterwards"

When you're suspended, all your posts (and comments to others' posts) disappear until such time as you're un-suspended (if you are, of course).

There's an entire discussion about this in scienceofsuck here.

What his wife (iceblink) conveniently forgets to mention, of course, is that he violated the LJ TOS by posting the personal (!) phone number, address etc. of another user, a 6A employee who he accused of sockpuppetry. Granted, the information was taking from public sources, but still - it's a rather underhanded tactic *and* a clear violation of the TOS.

What's more, he apparently was offered to have his journal unsuspended pretty much immediately as soon as he agreed to deleting the comment(s) in question (see rahaeli's comments on the post I mentioned above); his wife, of course, fails to mention that as well. Guess it doesn't fit in with his new role as a martyr.

All in all... I'm sorry. I very much dislike ads, and I very much dislike sponsored communities, and I think the latter open many cans of worms and put us on many slippery slopes, but insomnia asked for it and got what he deserved (a temporary suspension). I don't feel sorry for him in the slightest.

thanks for that information. i figured it had to have been a privacy violation; nothing else (but child porn, and i didn't think that was it) will get you immediately suspended.

regardless whether or not personally identifying information is available elsewhere, LJ's TOS forbids publicizing it, and i concur with that, wholeheartedly. LJ should not have to go seek out whether that data was public elsewhere; i think it is a perfectly good policy to simply forbid people to use LJ to potentially violate another person's privacy by spreading that sort of info.

i am especially sensitive to this right after asshole right-wing blogs have publicized the personal information of pages involved in the foley scandal. shame on them.

and shame on you, insomnia. you knew this was the policy. you knew what you had to do to get unsuspended. no love for this ( ... )

No, it's not immediate, it's selective -- my information has been posted in violation and rahaeli's corrupt merry band declined to act.

If you're "Abuse Team-approved", so to speak, you can get away with all kinds of crap. If you're not, you can be suspended at whim.
