I suck at giving emotional advice, but I hope everything turns out ok for you and your family. I can however, give you some advise on your career. I know you think I'm some kind of snobbish ass, but these are honest words, and it's up to you to take them or leave them.

You are good at photography. It shows on every image I have seen of yours. Photography can be fina art too, not just commercial. There are tons of people out there that live off of their photographs, and they don't necessarily have to be commercial shots.

SMC is a great visual arts college. Most of the faculty are working professionals, so you will get real life advice from them. If you don't want to be in school for a long time, then just get a degree there. While you're there, you can volunteer/intern at a magazine or newspaper. That way you can get some experience and make some connections while you're still in school. This will also help you decide whether you really want to do it professionally or not. Anyway, regardless of what it is you do, I still think your skills as a photographer are more than evident. Don't let it go to waste.
