How many books?

I was just replying to a comment to Swankivy saying something like "and everyone wants trilogies anyway" when I realized maybe that's not exactly true. I personally like trilogies or series (but once it passes 5 books it better be Harry Potter quality! new stuff in each book, not just filler books *I'm looking at you House of Night and The Immortals*)

I think I do like trilogies best. Standalone books feel like too much of an investment, Like a one night stand. You have a great time and you never see the characters again. With a trilogy, if it's a good one, the story will end before you actually get bored with the characters and want to move on but it will still leave you satisfied and give you closure. A 5+ book series can turn into a nightmare, a clingy boyfriend who calls you every two minutes, 'why aren't you reading me yet? don't you like me anymore? are you cheating on my with other books?' -_-;;; with these kinds of books often times I want to break the relationship off before the series is even finished, especially if some of the books just feel like filler material.

What is everyone's opinion?

How many books (for fantasy/ childrens fantasy/ YA fantasy genre) do agents/publishers want nowadays?
Is your project a standalone book or a part of a series?

right now mine is tentatively chopped up into two books but since book 1 spans 4 years in the main character's life it might end up getting cut in half, giving me a trilogy... ironically enough, it was originally planned to be a standalone book, despite everything i just said.
